San Sebastian , also Donostia-San Sebastian [1] ( Basque. Donostia , Spanish. San Sebastián , both names have official status), is a city in the Basque Country ( Spain ), the administrative center of the province of Gipuzkoa .

History

San Sebastian became the most fashionable and prestigious resort in Spain on the shore of the Bay of Biscay thanks to the wife of Emperor Napoleon III Eugenia Montijo , who first brought the imperial court to nearby Biarritz .

In the 17th century, San Sebastian was an important port in Spain.

Attractions

  • The shell-shaped bay and beaches on its shore of La Concha are San Sebastian's main attraction.
  • Palace of Congresses "Kursaal" .
  • La Mota Castle and the statue of Jesus Christ on top of Mount Urgul from the north side of the bay.
  • On the south side of the bay is the Igueldo funicular and an amusement park on Mount Igueldo.
  • Santa Clara island in the bay.
  • Church of San Vicente, the oldest building in the city.
  • Neo-Gothic city cathedral Buen Pastor.
  • Surriola Beach.

Culture and Art

In 1919, in San Sebastian, the future national treasure of Spain, Cristobal Balenciaga, opens its first Balenciaga Fashion House.

Annual Jazz Festival Jazzaldia

Every year on January 20 in San Sebastian, the Tambradrad Folk Festival is held .

In San Sebastian are several prestigious international festivals:

  • San Sebastian International Film Festival .
    The festival was founded in 1953. It takes place annually at the end of September. This is the most important film festival in Spain and Hispanic countries and one of the oldest and most important in Europe.
  • San Sebastian Horror and Fantasy Film Festival.
    The festival has been held since 1990. It takes place annually at the end of October.
  • International Jazz Festival Jazzaldia .
    It has been held since 1966 and is one of the most important jazz festivals in Europe.
