Biography

The date of birth in different sources indicates 1766 or 1769. His father Efim Dmitrievich was a marching Cossack ataman of the Don Cossack army and a regimental judge [2] . January 1, 1778 was recorded for military service by a Cossack. In 1779–1782 and 1784–1787 he served in the Caucasian line , where he participated in battles against the highlanders. July 20, 1780 became the captain . During the battle in 1787 on the Kinburn Spit , he was the first to notice the wound of A.V. Suvorov , bandaged his wound with his own tie, for which he was then awarded the nominal gold medal and the rank of Don Colonel. In 1788 he received the rank of military foreman, in 1790-1792 he participated in the Polish War , including the capture of Kamenetz-Podolsk; in 1798 he received the rank of lieutenant colonel , and on October 28, 1799 he was promoted to colonel . In 1801 he participated in the campaign of the regiment of his name to Orenburg and further to India.

During the War of the Fourth Coalition he fought with the French on the territory of Prussia . On May 22, 1807, the first of the Cossack officers received the Order of St. George, 4th class, for successfully crossing with the dismounted Cossacks by swimming across the river Narev near Rozhan and removing enemy pickets located along it. In 1808-1809, having entered the Moldavian army with his regiment, he participated in military operations against the Ottoman troops, including in the battles of Brailov , Girsov , Rasevat , Tataritsa. For the battle at Rasevat on December 22, 1809, he was awarded the Order of St. George of the 3rd class. On June 2, 1809, after the successful defeat of the Turks near Bratislava, he was given the rank of Major General . From 1810 to May 1812, he first went to the Platov Corps, then headed the Cossack brigade, which stood at the western borders.

During the Patriotic War of 1812, with his Cossack brigade he took part in many battles, including battles at Mir , Romanov (in this battle he was wounded by a sword in his left hand, but he captured 17 enemy officers and 293 men of lower ranks, for that he received the Order of St. Anne 1st Class), Smolensk , where, despite the death of a horse under him, the battalion of rangers saved Borderin, Maloyaroslavets , Kolotsky Monastery, Dorogobuzh from captivity, then participated in the pursuit of the French to the Russian border, capturing during battles f o Borisov and Vilna about three thousand prisoners and 11 guns. In March 1813 he was discharged from military service "for the disease on the Don" and did not participate in further combat operations against the French.

From 1820 he worked as a member of the committee on the structure of the Don Cossacks , in 1826 he returned to military service. On June 7, 1827, he was appointed ataman , on December 6 of the same year he was promoted to lieutenant general , on April 22, 1834, he was general from cavalry, but he didn’t show much energy in controlling troops. On February 10, 1836, shortly after the introduction of the new military position, he retired from service — formally on request, due to his state of health, but in fact, probably because of a conflict with War Minister Chernyshev .

He died in 1844.
