About the album

While working on this album, the group first invited additional vocalists and musicians. When recording the song “ One Caress ” a symphony orchestra was used . In general, the album is extremely harmonious, and electronics for the most part plays a supporting role, giving way to "live" instruments and the voice of a soloist.

A. Glebov [9] :

This epoch-making work can be safely considered the beginning of a new era of Depeche Mode. The era is not just “alive”, but I will not be afraid of this word, divine music, penetrating into all corners of the human soul, consciousness and subconscious. From the very first sounds, the listener is literally dissolved in these heartfelt romantic creations, which are called "songs."

The emotional shock of listening to “Songs of Faith & Devotion” is so great that it is not even possible to objectively evaluate the album. Well, to break it into ten different parts, that is, songs, is completely devoid of any meaning. Among them there is no mediocre. Absolutely all compositions are equally close to perfection, if they are not already such. And literally each is its own small, but rainbow world. The world of pure faith and great eternal love.

From the book “Depeche Mode. “Ups and Downs” " [10] :

Electronic sound almost boiled down to episodic and background. Guitars, drums, pipes and other acoustic instruments appeared in the foreground, not to mention the participation in the recording of the London symphony orchestra of 28 people. Alan sits down at the drums. The album ... shows a new concept of “depeshmodovtsy”, focusing on the live sound, which is typical primarily for rock bands. There is not a single dance composition on the album.

The theme of the album is religion, love and sex. On this album, according to the “despatists” themselves, they were inspired by the unbridled energy of American rock. David Gahan suddenly found unexpected rhythms in the music of Nirvana , Jane's Addiction and Tool , which reminded him of the seventies - the heyday of British punk . Dave was convinced that grunge is the future of rock and roll and the less synthesized sounds, the better.
