Pudost stone

Image of a chip of Pudost stone (fragment of the Amphitheater park structure). Visible inclusions of shells.

Pudostsky stone ( obsolete. Pudozhsky) - calcareous tuff mined near the village of Pudost, Gatchina district, Leningrad region . The deposits date from the late Pleistocene and were formed, apparently, on the site of a small lake .

Pudost stone should not be confused with granite mined in the city of Pudozh in Karelia ( Pudozh granite ).

Pudost stone is often called limestone , which is incorrect, and also confused with other similar rocks mined in the Gatchina region, for example, with Paritsky or Chernitsky stone.

Description

Fragment of the Pudosti map of the 1860s, which shows the location of the slab scrap

Pudostsky stone has a small bulk mass, porosity, frost resistance, and is also easy to process, therefore it was used for decorative work - wall cladding, sculptures . It has interesting properties that other finishing materials do not have - it changes color depending on lighting and weather, taking on different shades of gray and yellowish-gray. It has a porous structure, somewhat reminiscent of the structure of pumice , which, when used in cladding, gives the building a noble “ancient” look.

In addition to decorating, Pudost stone was used to make water filters and burn lime .

The reserves of stone in the Pudost quarries were rather small, so by the end of the XIX century they were almost completely exhausted. However, back in the 1920s , this stone was used in the restoration of sculptures of the Rostral columns .

Subsequently, crushed stone was mined in the deposit, as a result of which a lot of high-quality material was lost. This greatly affected during the restoration of buildings made of Pudost stone; I had to select other materials that were similar in color and properties.
