Life and work
Born in Brittany in the family of a merchant. In 1879, the parents separated, the children remained with their mother. He studied at Rennes , then at the Lyceum of Henry IV in Paris (among his teachers was Henri Bergson , and among classmates - the future poet Leon-Paul Farg and the future philologist Albert Thibodet ). He failed in exams at Ekol Normal , then at the Sorbonne , and never received a higher education.
He entered the circle of the capital's publishing house "Mercure de France", met Marcel Schwob , Remy de Gourmont , constantly visited the house of the influential writer Rashild . It was here in 1894 that the grotesque puppet drama King Ubyu was first read. In 1896, it was directed by the well-known director Aurelien Lunier-Po , a public scandal erupted in the performance (it is compared with the historical scandal at the premiere of Victor Hugo 's drama “ Hernani ”). Jarry translated the poems of Coleridge and Stevenson , remade the comedy by H. D. Grabbe " Joke, Satire, Irony ." He tried to publish a magazine, was fond of cycling.
He exhausted his inheritance, was in poverty, lived for some time with the customs officer Russo . His novel The Acts and Judgments of Dr. Faustroll, Pathophysicist was rejected by the Mercure de France publishing house and other publishers. Jarry, always distinguished by sharpness in behavior, quarreled with everyone, went hungry, sick, drank, used drugs (ether). He was paralyzed, died in the hospital.
Recognition
The work of Jarry was rediscovered by Apollinaire and the Surrealists . In 1926, Antonin Artaud, together with Roger Vitrack and Robert Aron, created the Alfred Jarry Theater. Jarry became a cult figure in the literary and theatrical avant-garde of Europe, the USA and Latin America, in particular - a kind of symbolic patron of the ULIPO group. In Laval, he erected a monument to the work of Osip Zadkine . Based on the farces about “ King Ubyu ”, the ballet by B. A. Zimmermann ( 1966 ) was written. In 1948, the Clownish College of Pathophysics was organized; in 1979, the Society of Friends of Alfred Jarry. In 2007, events were organized to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of the writer.
