Biography

Maximilian von Schwerin-Putzar was born on December 30, 1804 in Boldekow.

In 1847 he was elected to the United Landtag, where he belonged to the moderate liberals; On March 19, 1848, he received the post of Minister for Religious Affairs at the liberal ministry of Camphausen, with whom he retired in June of that year. He was also a member of the Frankfurt Parliament , where as a supporter of the hereditary empire belonged to the right faction.

In 1849, he was elected to the Prussian Chamber of Deputies and then re-elected to it at every new election, taking his place in the ranks of the first very small liberal party. In the first two legislative periods, 1849-1855, was the president of the Chamber of Deputies. In July 1859, he entered the Ministry of the “New Era” ( Karl Anton Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen ) as Minister of the Interior and held it for 3 years, using the sympathy of the liberals. With the triumph of the reaction in 1862, he retired with his cabinet, and in the Landtag he became the leader of a small party of "old liberals."

In the era of conflict (1862-1866), he fought with the Bismarck government, refusing to accept the budget. After defeating Austria in 1866, Schwerin was one of the first liberals to stand for reconciliation with the Bismarck government. He voted for the indemnity demanded by Bismarck.

With almost all of his party, he then joined the National Liberal Party, which had emerged from the ranks of the progressives, whose active member remained to death, in the Landtag and in the constituent (1867) and North German Reichstag (1867-1870).
