Biography
The early years
Nobuo Terao (this is the real name of the actor) was born into a poor family in the village of Mondzyu, which was located in the county of Asuva (Fukui Prefecture). Currently, this village, as well as the county as a whole, have become part of the sprawling metropolis of Fukui, the administrative center of the prefecture of the same name. After graduating from high school in Fukui, the young man leaves for Tokyo, where he enters (Nihon University College of Art) [3] . Studying at the university, the young man, due to lack of funds, had to earn extra money by mail delivering newspapers.
Theater Activities
An eighteen-year-old boy, he joined the proletarian theater troupe , and in 1934 , having dropped out of university [2] , he joined the movement for the democratic renewal of the theater. He was an actor in the theaters "Sayoku hekijo", [2] , where the formation of the personality of the young actor was led by proletarian theatrical figures, playwright and director Tomoyoshi Murayama , actor Eitaro Ozawa and others. In the same years he joined the Communist Party of Japan . He received recognition in 1938 by playing the role of Jiro in the play Sakae Kubo "Volcanic land."
On August 19, 1940 he was arrested by the political police for anti-war actions and communist views [3] . The actor spent his war years on forced labor in mobile theater troupes serving the troops. He found the end of the war while on the island of Borneo .
After the end of World War II, along with actors Osamu Takizawa and Masao Shimizu , Jukichi Uno was one of the founders in 1947 of the new People’s Theater (Minshu Geijutsu Heikijo) [2] . After intra-theatrical strife in 1949, Jukichi Uno left the troupe, but in 1950, he and Osamu Takizawa and actress Tanie Kitabayayashi re-create a troupe with the same name [4] . After performing roles in plays by European authors, including Russian classics ( A.P. Chekhov ), Dzyukiti Uno quickly becomes the leader of a new theater group. In 1959 he made his debut as a theater director. He staged plays by modern playwrights [2] .
Movie career
In cinema, the actor made his debut in the war years, however, these works did not leave any trace in his biography. He began to act most actively in the post-war years, mainly working in independent film companies, playing with such masters of film directing as Kenji Mizoguchi ( The Saikaku Woman , 1952 ), Mikio Naruse (The Cruel World, 1950 ), Keisuke Kinoshita (The Broken Testament ) , 1948 - The Mainity Award for the supporting role; The Ghost of Yotsui , 1949 and others), Kodzaburo Yoshimura (The Brilliant Days of Our Lives , 1948 - The Mainity Award for the supporting role; Before the Dawn , 1953 ), Fumio Kamei (“ A Woman Walks Alone on the Earth ”, 1953 ), Kon Ichikawa (“A History of Haunted Youth” , 1955 ), Shiro Toyoda (Wild Goose, 1953 ), Heinosuke Gosho (Valley of Love and Death, 1954 ), Tom Utida (The Void I Created, 1955 ), Yoshishige Yoshida ( Sources of Akitsu , 1962 ) and others. But the actor played his best work in cinema in the films of the independent director Kaneto Shindo , with whom he collaborated several times: “ The Story of His Beloved Wife ”, 1951 ; " Children of Hiroshima " ( 1952 ); “ Miniature ”, “ Life of a Woman ” (both - 1953 ); The Ditch ( 1954 ); The Wolves (1955); " Happy Dragon No. 5 " ( 1959 ); The Demon Woman (Onibaba, 1964 ), The Scoundrel ( 1965 ), etc.
In the joint Soviet-Japanese film The Little Runaway ( 1966 , directors by Teinosuke Kinugasa , Eduard Bocharov ), Dzyukichi Uno played the role of Nobuyuki Noda, the uncle of the little hero of the film.
From 1956 he stood on the other side of the camera, putting five films as a director until the end of the 1950s [2] .
From the second half of the 1950s, he created a number of interesting works in films by independent director Satsuo Yamamoto : “The Human Wall” ( 1959 ) - the Mainity Award for the supporting role; The Matsukawa Affair ( 1961 ); The Plant of Slaves ( 1969 ). In the film Satsuo Yamamoto's "Ring-shaped eclipse of the sun" ( 1975 ) played the role of financial magnate Ishihara, first introduced on the screen in the form of a negative character.
Personal life
The actor’s wife was a housewife Misako Uno. His eldest son is the actor and musician Akira Therao (b. 1947) [1] . Akira Terao played on the TV screen the image of his father in a small episode of the miniseries " Little Brother " (2004, dir. Setsuro Wakamatsu).
The last years of life
In the last years of his life, the actor struggled with a disease - cancer, having undergone surgery to remove two-thirds of the stomach and half of the left lung. At the same time, until the last days he went on stage, played in films and on television [3] . On January 9, 1988, Jukichi Uno died at the age of 73 at a Shibuya-ku hospital (Tokyo) from lung cancer .
