Between the three winners of the tournament, an additional two-round competition was provided. However, in the first round of this match-tournament, Marotsi lost to Pilsbury with a rough look and, referring to his state of health, refused to continue the fight and took the 3rd prize. As a result, Schlechter and Pilsbury played a match of four games. In the first two, they exchanged victories with black pieces, the remaining two ended in a draw. Not wishing to continue the competition, the winners agreed among themselves that Pilsbury would receive the first prize of 1000 marks and the second prize of 800 marks and a silver gilded goblet with chess pieces (a special gift from the Prince Regent of Bavaria) would go to Schlechter.
