The state, originally part of the Northwest Territories , was admitted to the United States on the 17th in a row, March 1, 1803 . His official nickname is " Horse Chestnut State." The state capital and largest city is Columbus . In the United States, the state ranks tenth in population density.

The name “Ohio” comes from the Iroquois word “ohi-yo '”, which means “big river”.
The Ohio government consists of the executive , led by the governor , the legislature , which includes the Ohio General Assembly, and the judiciary , on top of which the state has the Supreme Court. Representatives of Ohio currently occupy 18 seats in the US House of Representatives .
Ohio's joking nickname is Yankee State [5] (Translated: Yankee State ).
History
On the territory of Ohio is the Serpent Mound - an ancient monument of Native American earthen architecture. In antiquity, the cultures of Aden , Hopewell and Fort Aishent , whose ethnicity is unclear, were consistently represented on the territory of the current state. Over time, this space was inhabited by representatives of Algonkin peoples (mainly), as well as Sioux and Iroquois .
The development of Ohio by Europeans began in the XVIII century with the French immigrants, who founded a number of settlements for the purchase of fur from the local Native American population. After the war between Great Britain and France in 1755-1763. the territory of Ohio fell under British control, and subsequently, according to the Versailles Peace Treaty of 1783 , became owned by the colonists who won the war for independence .
In the years 1835-1836. Ohio had a territorial dispute with Michigan , which prevented (from filing Ohio) the adoption of Michigan into the United States.
Population
In 1800, there were just over 45 thousand inhabitants in Ohio. The population then grew at a rate of over 10% per decade, and at the time of the 1970 census, just over 10,650,000 people were registered. Over the next three decades, growth slowed, and in 2000 the population in Ohio was about 11.35 million. As of July 1, 2011, it was estimated at 11,544,951 (according to the US Census Bureau ). In terms of population growth, Ohio lags behind the rest of the states.

The most famous industrial company is Eaton (aerospace, transformer industry, auto industry ). The headquarters of Diebold , the largest ATM manufacturer, is located in Canton.
Also developed are agriculture , coal mining, ferrous metallurgy, mechanical engineering, the production of aircraft and automobiles, chemicals, rubber, office equipment, and oil refining.

There are several dozen skyscrapers in Ohio. The two highest buildings in the state - Key Tower (289 m) and Terminal Tower (235 m) - are located in Cleveland . The third tallest state building, the Great American Tower on Queen City Square (203 m), is located in Cincinnati .
