History

On the territory of Ohio is the Serpent Mound - an ancient monument of Native American earthen architecture. In antiquity, the cultures of Aden , Hopewell and Fort Aishent , whose ethnicity is unclear, were consistently represented on the territory of the current state. Over time, this space was inhabited by representatives of Algonkin peoples (mainly), as well as Sioux and Iroquois .

The development of Ohio by Europeans began in the XVIII century with the French immigrants, who founded a number of settlements for the purchase of fur from the local Native American population. After the war between Great Britain and France in 1755-1763. the territory of Ohio fell under British control, and subsequently, according to the Versailles Peace Treaty of 1783 , became owned by the colonists who won the war for independence .

In the years 1835-1836. Ohio had a territorial dispute with Michigan , which prevented (from filing Ohio) the adoption of Michigan into the United States.

Population

In 1800, there were just over 45 thousand inhabitants in Ohio. The population then grew at a rate of over 10% per decade, and at the time of the 1970 census, just over 10,650,000 people were registered. Over the next three decades, growth slowed, and in 2000 the population in Ohio was about 11.35 million. As of July 1, 2011, it was estimated at 11,544,951 (according to the US Census Bureau ).
