Member of the Board of Directors under Joan Laporte (2003-2005)
Bartomeu, along with his friend Sandro Rosell , whom he met while studying at ESADE, was a member of the Board of Directors of Joan Laporta, who won the 2003 Barcelona presidential election. At the club, he was responsible for the basketball, handball and hockey sections, and in the very first season the Barcelona basketball team won the national championship and the Super Bowl. In the 2004/05 season, disagreements arose between Bartomeu and Laporta over changes to the club’s organization that were made by the president and several members of the Board of Directors. In March 2005, Laporta relieved Bartomeu of his duties following Bartomeu’s public disagreement on the appointment of Valero Rivera as the general director of these sections and Manolo Flores as head coach of the basketball team.
In June 2005, Bartomeu, along with Sandro Rossel and three other members of the Board of Directors, resigned due to the disapproval of Laporta’s management style.

However, in the case of Neymar and Bartomeu himself, the Spanish prosecutor charged the tax evasion and fraud [2] . During the court hearings, Bartomeu stated that he did not participate in the negotiation process with Neymar and was not involved in signing contracts for this transfer. In March 2016, all charges against Bartomeu, like Rosel, were dropped [3] .
Despite the fact that initially Bartomeu planned to end his term on June 30, 2016, in January 2015 he announced the holding of presidential elections at the end of the 2014/15 season.
