Getting

  • The effect of aqueous solutions of ammonia or alkalis on acidic solutions of plutonium (IV) compounds:
Pu(SOfour)2+fourNaOH+xH2O→Pu(OH)four⋅xH2O↓+2Na2SOfour{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {Pu (SO_ {4}) _ {2} + 4NaOH + xH_ {2} O \ {\ xrightarrow {}} \ Pu (OH) _ {4} \ cdot xH_ {2} O \ downarrow + 2Na_ {2} SO_ {4}}}}
the reaction begins to go already at pH ≈ 1.
  • Freshly precipitated plutonium (III) hydroxide in air is rapidly oxidized to plutonium (IV):
fourPu(OH)3+O2+2H2O→fourPu(OH)four{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {4Pu (OH) _ {3} + O_ {2} + 2H_ {2} O \ {\ xrightarrow {}} \ 4Pu (OH) _ {4}}}}

Physical Properties

Plutonium (IV) hydroxide forms a dark green or olive green amorphous precipitate of the composition Pu (OH) 4 • n H 2 O. It is polymerized during long-term storage and changes color to emerald green. Air-dried sediment contains approximately 2 water molecules.

Not soluble in water, p PR = 58. Solubility increases in solutions of sodium sulfate or sodium carbonate .

Chemical Properties

  • Decomposes on heating:
Pu(OH)four⋅xH2O→100-400oCPuO2+(x+2)H2O{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {Pu (OH) _ {4} \ cdot xH_ {2} O \ {\ xrightarrow {100-400 ^ {o} C}} \ PuO_ {2} + (x + 2) H_ { 2} O}}}
  • Reacts with acids:
Pu(OH)four⋅xH2O+2H2SOfour→Pu(SOfour)2+(x+2)H2O{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {Pu (OH) _ {4} \ cdot xH_ {2} O + 2H_ {2} SO_ {4} \ {\ xrightarrow {}} \ Pu (SO_ {4}) _ {2} + (x + 2) H_ {2} O}}}
