Story
At Royal Harbor
Tyrion ( Peter Dinklage ) asks Varis ( Conlet Hill ) for evidence that the queen tried to kill him during the Battle of Blackwater. Varis replies that he does not have them, and tells him the story of how he became a eunuch because of the sorcerer in Mirra. As soon as his story ends, Varis opens a huge box, inside which is the sorcerer whom Varis has been looking for for years for revenge. Varis later receives information from Ros ( Esme Bianco ) that reveals Lord Bailish's plans to take Sansa Stark ( Sophie Turner ) to the Eagle's Nest, where he goes to marry Lisa Arren. Continuing the investigation, Varis meets Lady Olena ( Diana Rigg ) to discuss her interest in Sansa. He warns her that the Bailish could become dangerous if he gains more power by controlling the heir to the North.
King Joffrey ( Jack Gleason ) takes Lady Margery ( Natalie Dormer ) on an excursion to the Great Septa Baylor, where Queen Cersei ( Lina Hedi ) and Lady Olenna discuss the upcoming wedding. Margery invites Joffrey to go out on the porch to greet the crowd and demonstrate his love for his subjects, this act angers Cersei. Cersei later meets with his father, Tywin ( Charles Dance ), to discuss the importance of Jaime returning, as well as the presence of the Tyrells in King's Landing. Cersei does not trust Margery because of her ability to manipulate Joffrey. Margery and Sansa get to know each other closer when Margery finds Sansa for prayers. Margery expresses her hope that Sansa will visit Highgarden, but Sansa says that Cersei will not allow her to leave King's Landing. Margaery replies that after she becomes queen, Sansa will marry her brother, Syrah Loras.
In the North
Bran ( Isaac Hampstead-Wright ) has another dream where he runs through the forest, along with Joyen Reed ( Thomas Brody Sangster ), chasing a three-eyed raven. Bran climbs a tree in pursuit of the raven, but falls when he sees his mother, Caitilin ( Michelle Fairley ), who tells him not to climb.
Somewhere in the north, Theon ( Alfie Allen ) and the young man who freed him ( Ivan Reon ) travel to Darkshire, where the sister supposedly awaits Theon, Yara. Being in the underground tunnel entrance of the castle, Theon tells the young man that he actually did not find the Stark boys. Therefore, he ordered Dagmer to kill two orphans and pass them off as Stark’s children. When they enter the castle, by the light of the torch, it turns out that Theon was brought back to the dungeon, from where the young man helped him escape. He passes Theon to the guards, reporting that Theon escaped and killed his pursuers, and he brought Theon back.
In Riverlands
On the way through the Riverlands, Locke ( Noah Taylor ) and his people taunt Sir Jaime Lannister ( Nikolai Coster-Waldau ) because of his severed arm. When Jaime falls from his horse, he snatches a sword from one of the people of Locke and attacks them, but due to the injury and the sword in his left hand, the people of Locke deal with it and beat him. At the camp, Brienne ( Gwendolyn Christie ) talks to Jaime, who refuses food, saying that he wants to die. She reports to him that he “surrendered”, that he only tasted the real life, albeit having lost a lot, saying that in order to take revenge on Locke, he needs to survive.
Arya ( Macy Williams ), Jendry ( Joe Dempsey ), and Sandor Cleagan ( Rory McCann ) bring Toros from the World ( Paul Kay ) and his people to the Lair of the Brotherhood Without Banners. They are introduced to Berik Dondarrion ( Richard Dormer ). Dondarrion calls Kligan an assassin, but he denies this, saying he committed the killings to protect Prince Joffrey. Arya tells the Brotherhood of Mika, the son of a butcher, whom Kligan killed. Kligan defends his actions, as he believed in Joffrey's lie that Mika attacked him first. Dondarrion condemns Kligan to the test by duel.
Behind the Wall
Grenn (Mark Stanley), Edd ( Ben Crompton ) and Rast (Luke Barnes) are forced to clean up the pigs while working in Craster Castle; Rast does not trust Craster. Samwell ( John Bradley ) and Lilly ( Hannah Murray ) discuss what will happen to her newborn son if Craster ( Robert Pugh ) finds out about his existence. People of the Night Watch bury their fallen brother and soon return for dinner to Craster Castle. Karl ( Byrne Gorman ) is unhappy with the meager food Kraster feeds them and challenges him. Rast drives Craster into a rage, calling him a bastard. Craster grabs the ax and throws himself at Karl, who kills him with a knife in the throat. When the Lord Commander ( James Cosmo ) tries to fight Carl, Rast thrusts a knife into his back, after which the Commander falls and is finished off. A fight begins among the Night Watch brothers, and Sam escapes with Lilly and her baby.
Over the Narrow Sea
Daenerys ( Emilia Clark ) gives one of her dragons to the slave merchant Kraznis ( Dan Hildebrand ) in exchange for an army of the Impeccable. Throughout the meeting, Kraznis insults her in the Valyrian language. After completing the deal, Daenerys tells him that Valyrian is her mother tongue and she heard everything he said. Daenerys orders his new army to sack Astapor, kill the slave traders and free all the slaves they find. When the frightened Kraznis tries to order the Impeccable to oppose their new mistress, Daenerys orders his dragon to burn Kraznis. After the battle ends, Daenerys frees the Impeccable and tells them that they can stay with her as free people or leave if they want. No one wanted to leave her, showing her their support with a clatter of spears. Daenerys throws a whip and leaves Astapor with the army.
Production
Script
The script for "Now His Watch Is Over" was written by show runners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It was based on the novels of George Martin, chapters of Tyrion X from the Battle of the Kings and Jaime IV, Tyrion II, Samwell II, the first half of Arya VI and the second half of Daenerys III from Storm of Swords. [2]
Benioff and Weiss considered this episode to be one of the "major" and turning points in the series. Weiss said that when he read books, he was swept away by the final scene with Daenerys and remembered how he thought how he could transfer it to the screen if he could make a film from it. [3]
The final scene includes the first draft of the High Valirian Language in the series, except for a few on-duty phrases spoken by Daenerys. [4] Up to this point, only the Astapor dialect of the Low Valirian language, the Creole form of the ancient language of the old Valirian Empire, could be heard, it was spoken by the slave trader Kraznis. David J. Peterson, the language creator hired by the series, created both versions of the language. [four]
Casting
The episode re-introduces Lord Berik Dondarrion, this time played by Richard Dormer . Dondarrion was previously played by David Michael Scott in a small appearance in his first season episode of The Golden Crown , in which Lord Eddard Stark entrusted him with the task of capturing Sir Grigor Cleagan.
Directing
The episode was filmed by director Alex Graves , a newcomer to production. The producers praised his work, especially when processing the final scene in Astapor: “He took on the scene, which made us nervous - the number of people on set, the size of the action, the number of effects - and all this was done in a few days. A scene that could have been shot in eight days; we had two or three. ” [3]
Location
The interiors of the episode were filmed at The Paint Hall in Belfast, including a new performance of the colossal Great Septa Baylor in Royal Harbor. They also filmed in the forests of the Clandeba Manor, where the scenery of Craster Castle and the Locke gang camp were built. [5] The gardens where Olenna and Varis stroll are part of the Trsteno Arboretum, Croatia.
Scenes from Daenerys were filmed in Morocco. Earlier in three episodes, Astapor was represented by the coastal ramparts of Essaouira , this time the square and walls were installed in Atlas Studio, 5 kilometers west of Ouarzazate . The walls were built for the scenery of the city of Jerusalem for the 2005 film, Kingdom of Heaven . [6]
