History

Barracks Gun Club Hill

For a long time on the site of Kunchon there was a village whose inhabitants cultivated land in a fertile river valley, as well as the post of the imperial troops, protecting the coast from invasions of pirates and foreigners. Later, by order of a Qing official Lin Zesu , a fort was built here on a hill, which in 1839 repelled the British attack. During British rule, the hill and the Chinese fort located on it were torn down to fill new lands northwest of Jordan Road.

After the British acquired Kowloon , large army huts were built in the territory of the modern Jordan area. British officers hunted birds in the surrounding thickets, and later organized a shooting club, which is why the area was called Gun Club Hill [3] .

After 1979, when the Jordan metro station was opened, a new name was assigned to the Kunchhun district. After the transition of Hong Kong to the sovereignty of China, the Chinese army, which built a military hospital here, occupied the barracks of Gan Club Hill.

Geography

King George V Park

In the south, Jordan borders the Chimsachei district, in the west - with the West Kowloon district, in the north - with the region, in the east - with the campus of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University .

The western part of the district, between Jordan Road, Cox Road, Austin Road and Canton Road, is also known as Kwun Chung (官 涌), but after the opening of the Jordan subway station, the old name is used less and less. Gun Club Hill Barracks (расположены 會 山 兵 房), a former British military base now occupied by the Chinese army, are located in eastern Jordan.

In the Jordan area are the King George V Memorial Park, founded in 1940, and the Kowloon Cricket Club Square.

Temple Street Night Market

For a long time, old residential and office buildings prevailed in the area. Especially many restaurants and cafes (including Indian, Nepalese and Filipino cuisine) are located in the area of Wusun Street, Temple Street, Shanghai Street, Nanjing Street and Ninpo Street [4] [5] .

At the crossroads of Saigon Street and Temple Street is the famous night market . Unlike the night market in Moncock, which is famous for women's goods, the Temple Street market specializes in men's fashion (clothes, shoes, mobile phones, watches, lighters and antiques), as well as old music. The colorful market was shown in many Hong Kong films as a decoration of the old city [6] [7] .

On Canton Road, the Jade Market is located. Kunchong Municipal Services Building has a grocery market. In recent years, the number of branches of banks and insurance companies, supermarkets, modern hotels and shopping centers, high-rise offices and residential buildings has been growing in the region. Especially many modern shops and shopping centers are located along Nathan Road (JD Mall and Chuang's London Plaza).

High-rise residential complexes The Austin and Grand Austin were built near the Austin metro station.

A multi-level West Kowloon station was built near the Austin metro station - the terminal station of the Guangzhou — Shenzhen — Hong Kong high-speed railway (a section of the road in the Jordan area runs through tunnels). The opening of the station took place in 2018 [8] [9] .

It is also planned to build a large bus station and multi-level parking in the area of Austin metro station and West Kowloon railway station. After the completion of the project, this multifunctional transport hub will be the largest in Kowloon.
