Biography

Ray Cummings was born on August 30, 1887 in New York . One course I studied at Princeton University , worked as a secretary at the Thomas Alva Edison enterprise.

Started to be published in 1919 , the debut publication - the story "The Girl in the Golden Atom" ("The Girl in the Golden Atom") in the magazine " All-Story " ( March 15 ). Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Cummings remained one of the most popular authors of Argosy magazine and several others, in which he published many short stories and a number of novels in various genres, but his works in the genre of adventure fiction gained the most popularity. It is believed that he contributed to a significant increase in the popularity of this genre before the advent of specialized science fiction magazines.

The main works of Cummings are the cycle “Matter, Space and Time”: the novels “People of Fire” (“The Fire People”, 1922), “The Man Who Commanded Time” (“The Man Who Mastered Time”, 1924), “Princess of the Atom ”(“ Princess of the Atom ”, 1929),“ Shadow Girl ”(“ The Shadow Girl ”, 1929),“ Flight from Time ”(“ The Excile of Time ”, 1931). The drama “Tama” is written in imitation of the “Martian” series by E. R. Burroughs : the terrestrial girl is abducted by the inhabitants of Mercury, and she gradually becomes their master: “Tama of the Light Country” (1930), “Tama Princess of Mercury ”(Tama, Princess of Mercury, 1931).

In addition to novels, Cummings wrote many short stories and stories - fantastic, detective and adventure - for various thematic pulp magazines. His works during the 1920s and 1940s often appeared in specialized science fiction magazines Amazing Stories , Astounding Science Fiction , Wonder Stories , and others.

Sometimes Ray Cummings was also published under the pseudonyms Ray King, Gabriel Cummings, and Gabriel Wilson.

By the beginning of the 1940s, Cummings' popularity gradually faded away, and by 1950 he had practically ceased to be published.

Ray Cummings passed away at Mount Vernon on January 23, 1957 .
