Biography

Born in Odessa, in the family of Lev Petrovich (Pinhusovich) Shmulyan (1891-1946) and Agatha Abramovna Rukhelman (1900-1978). My father was a medical scientist, ophthalmologist, pioneer of cadaveric corneal transplantation in the USSR, candidate of medical sciences ("Partial through corneal transplantation from the corpse's corpse eye", 1937), co-author of the index "Bibliography on corneal transplantation 1814-1935" (with B. S. Brodsky, 1936).

In 1949 he graduated from Odessa University . Since 1951 he taught at the Zhytomyr Pedagogical Institute (Department of Higher Mathematics) and Kharkov University [1] [2] [3] . He defended his thesis in 1956 under the guidance of M. G. Kerin [4] .

Major works in the field of operator theory. Translated into Russian the monograph by Bela Szekefalvi-Nadya and Chapririan Foias "Harmonic analysis of operators in a Hilbert space" (1970).

Suddenly died in 1990 in Odessa from a stroke . He was buried in the Jewish section of the Second International Cemetery .

Family

  • Wife - Lesya Naumovna Shmulyan (nee Hunger ; October 23, 1926 - December 24, 2017), a mathematics teacher, a participant in the Great Patriotic War .
    • Son - Victor (born 1953) and daughter Vera (married Kharsakh, born 1957) [9] .
  • Uncle - economist Moses Petrovich (Pinhusovich) Shmulyan (1899-1955). Another uncle is biochemist Anisim Abramovich Rukhelman, the author of works on urease metabolism, pharmacokinetics of antibiotics.
  • He was also related to the mathematician Vitold Shmulyan and the checker theorist Theodor Shmulyan (cousins ​​of his father).
