Biography
Born in the family of a famous Tuscan lawyer. He was educated in the field of paleography and diplomacy at the Central State Archive of Florence, in which he later worked as an archivist. In 1865, he transferred to the Siena archive, from 1874 he taught Latin paleography and the history of diplomacy at the Institute of Higher Studies in Florence: first with the rank of extraordinary, and since 1886 an ordinary professor of auxiliary historical disciplines, studying the old documents there. From 1887 to 1902, that is, until the end of his life, he edited the journal “Archivio storico italiano”, published by the Department of the National History of Tuscany [4] .
In addition to many articles on the history of Florence and on his specialty, he wrote the work “Programma scolastico di paleografia latina e di diplomatica” (Florence, 3 volumes 1888-1894, 2nd edition in 1900). This work, repeatedly reprinted and translated into German (published in 3 volumes in 1895-1900), became an important contribution to the development of both sciences (paleography and the history of diplomacy) in Italy.
