Nikolai Ivanovich Skatkin (years of birth and death are not known) is a Russian mechanic and inventor of the 19th century.
Born in Mosalsk, Kaluga province . From the merchant estate.
Since 1839, he combined trading activities with mechanics.
In 1842, he invented a hydraulic rotary press, and in 1844 he built a horizontal semi-rotary pump with a capacity of 3 times higher than a vertical of the same diameter. Both of these inventions received privileges for 10 years.
In 1846, Mr .. addressed with his discovery to the Minister of Sea Prince. A. S. Menshikov , who ordered to start testing the pumps. They were recognized as an extremely useful invention for pumping water from ships, for draining docks, and for extinguishing fires on ships. In view of this, Skatkin’s pumps on the Baltic Fleet were replaced by British pumps that were previously in use.
Skatkin was also entrusted with the installation of water pipelines in Kronstadt , and he completed this work quite successfully.
In the late 40s, Skatkin set up a large workshop in Moscow for the construction and repair of various machines.
In 1854, a mechanical engineer in St. Petersburg, a hereditary honorary citizen Nikolai Ivanovich Skatkin, submitted for consideration by the Marine Scientific Committee drawings and a model of a submarine intended for operations against Anglo-French ships by putting special mines under their bottoms. It was proposed to use a steam engine with a boiler equipped with a sealed firebox as an engine, into which compressed air from a cylinder was supposed to be supplied. Charging the balloon with air was carried out using a pump while the boat was in the surface position. There was enough air for 5 minutes.
In 1855, he created a new project in which, instead of a steam engine, he used a pneumatic machine of his own design as an engine. Both projects were rejected as difficult to implement.
With the support of Academician B.S. Jacobi , Skatkin built a submarine at his own expense and in 1862 tested it with the participation of Academicians Jacobi and Chebyshev. Information on the results was not preserved.
