Grigor Dpir Varagetsi

Grigor Dpir ^[1] Varaghetsi (or Vanetsi ) is an Armenian scribe and chronicler of the 17th century.

He worked at the monastery of Varaga , near the city of Van . In 1684, during the rewriting of one Aismavurka , I wrote a small chronicle on the margin of the pages covering the period between 1306 and 1682 (several events of the 7th — 12th centuries are mentioned, but the coherent narrative begins in the XIV century). The value is represented by the last few reports relating to the life of Grigor ^[2] (for example, the earthquake in Van in 1648 ^[3] ). At the end of the chronicle, Grigor added one of his poems - “On Smokers” ( Armenian “Սակս ծուխ քաշողաց” ) ^[2] . In the poem, smoking is presented as a serious sin, the author complains that there are fools who borrow money to buy tobacco , that this bad habit has spread even among priests, etc. ^[4] .

The Chronicle of Varagetsi was partially published in 1888, a full-fledged critical edition was published in 1912, then again in 1956 ^[2] . In 2011 she was translated into Czech .
