Formation History

The history of the formation of the Azerbaijani diaspora is one of the most diverse in Kazakhstan: among the Azerbaijanis of Kazakhstan there are descendants of voluntary immigrants of the beginning of the 20th century, and several waves of repressed Azerbaijanis deported from Georgia [4] and Armenia in 1937 , then in 1944-1949. Finally, in the 1950s and 1980s, some Azerbaijanis from Azerbaijan proper traveled to the republic by distribution or at their own request to work in oil wells (at least 15,000) [5] . The descendants of deported Azerbaijanis live compactly in the villages of South Kazakhstan, they are well rooted in the republic and traditionally engaged in agriculture. In the 1990s, due to the start of the oil boom in Azerbaijan, part of the diaspora left the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan. However, by 2009, high natural growth helped offset losses from emigration and even exceeded them. The descendants of the last waves, as well as more mobile youth, are increasingly inclined to move to large cities, especially Almaty , where their share reached 0.5% of the total population. But still every third Azerbaijani in Kazakhstan (about 33 thousand people) lives in the South Kazakhstan region .
