Hydronym
In 1821, M. N. Vasiliev recorded the name of the lake as “ Akulogak ”, and in 1836 F. P. Litke noted the Eskimo name of lake naugeik [1] as “ Naknek ” (or from the Yupik word meaning “ muddy ”) [1 ] . During the census in the 1880s, Ivan Petrov named the lake in honor of Francis A. Walker [2] [3] .
Description
The lake is approximately 64 km long and 5 to 13 km wide. Its area is 610 km². It has a drain in the form of the Naknek River , which carries its waters to the Bristol Bay of the Bering Sea [4] . South of Lake Naknek is Brooks Lake. Previously, about 5000 years ago, they were one lake, the level of which was much higher today. However, then the Naknek River cut through the glacial moraine and the water level in the lake dropped. Brooks Lake separated from Lake Naknek and began to flow into it in the form of the Brooks River [5] . About halfway between the lakes, the Brooks River falls in the form of waterfalls, widely known among tourists, as a place to observe brown bears catching salmon here.
Near the lake, moose and wolves are often observed, sometimes wolverines [6] . Grizzly bears are also often observed along the shores of the lake; they are especially numerous in the Brooks Camp area, located at the confluence of the Brooks River.
