Origin

The origin of the variety is unknown. The first mention in the literature of the Korichnoye variety in 1810 in the book of V.A. Levshina "The steward or practical instruction in all parts of agriculture." In more detail this variety was described by the Moscow nursery breeder N.A. Krasnoglazov in 1848 in the book "The Rules of Fruit Growing" [2] .

Title

The name of the variety is supposedly due to the fact that the fruits of the variety have a cinnamon smell. However, the outstanding Russian pomologist M.V. Rytov did not believe that the apples of the variety have the smell of cinnamon [3] . Although it should be noted that the word “cinnamon” in Russian comes from the word cinnamon. It is under the name “Brown” variety that is mentioned in the “Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language” by V.I. Dahl in 1861, as well as in the book of M.V. Rytov's “Russian Apples” 1914 [4] .

Distribution

At one time, it is widely distributed throughout the middle zone of Russia, especially in the central regions. In the Volga region it is less common, mainly by individual trees, although it was included in the standard assortment of nurseries in Tatarstan. It was even less common in Bashkiria and the Orenburg region.

Variety characteristics

The tree is strong-growing, in youth the crown is wide-pyramidal, in adult trees it is round, with hanging branches. Skeletal branches depart from the trunk at a very sharp angle and can easily break off under the weight of the crop, so you should especially carefully monitor the timely support of the support for fruiting trees.

Fruits of medium or lower magnitude, highly flattened, repetitive, without ribs or with small shares. The main color is greenish when picked up and yellow at the time of consumer maturity. The integumentary coloring in the form of dark red sharply defined stripes and specks on a weakly expressed reddish background from the sunny side.

A feature of the fruit is a shallow wide saucer, with five clearly visible swellings (“pearls”) at the base of the sepals.

According to the taste of fruits, Cinnamon striped is one of the best varieties of central Russia. The pulp is tender, sour-sweet, with a characteristic spice and aroma.

Use in Breeding

With the participation of Cinnamon striped, about 20 new varieties were created, including varieties from the All-Russian Research Institute of Horticulture named after I.V. Michurina: Cinnamon New, Autumnal Joy and Young Naturalist (everything from crossing Cinnamon Striped x Wellsie).
