Biography

Maria Rosaria Bindi was born in a family of faithful Catholics on February 12, 1951 in Sinalung ( province of Siena , Tuscany ). She graduated from the International Free University of Social Sciences Guido Carly in Rome ( LUISS ) with a degree in Political Science , and then became an assistant to Professor , a well-known lawyer and Christian Democratic politician who taught her law at the university. From 1975 to 1980, Rosie Bindi was a member of the Sinalunga Communal Council . On February 12, 1980, when the team killed Bachelet with several pistol shots, Bindi was in the building of La Sapienza University of Rome , where the tragedy occurred. From 1983 to 1989, Bindi was a member of the National Council and vice president of Italian Catholic Action . She was also a member of the National Council and the secretariat of the Italian People’s Party , in 2007 she was elected to the secretariat of the newly formed Democratic Party , receiving 13.8% of the vote and taking second place after Walter Veltroni [1] [2] .

On November 7, 2009, she was elected chairman of the Democratic Party [3] , and on April 19, 2013, on the day of the failure of the candidacy of Romano Prodi in the presidential election due to a split in the Democratic Party, she resigned [4] .

From July 25, 1989 to July 18, 1994 she was a member of the European Parliament , where she was elected on the list of the Christian Democratic Party . It was a member of the European People’s Party - European Democrats , from January 15, 1992 to July 18, 1994 headed the Commission on Citizens' Appeals [5] .

Since 1994, Rosie Bindi was elected six times to the Chamber of Deputies of the XII-XVII convocations, where she represented first the IPP, then Margarita and the PD (since 2007). Since October 22, 2013, he leads the Parliamentary Commission to investigate the phenomenon of mafia and other criminal organizations, including foreign ones (COMMISSIONE PARLAMENTARE DI INCHIESTA SUL FENOMENO DELLE MAFIE E SULLE ALTRE ASSOCIAZIONI CRIMINALI, ANCHE STRANIERE), referred to as the Italian Presse 6 ] [7] .

Rosie Bindi was the Minister of Health in the first government of Prodi (May 17, 1996 - October 21, 1998) [8] , as well as in the first (October 21, 1998 - December 22, 1999) [9] and second governments of D'Alem (December 22, 1999 - 25 April 2000) [10] . In the second government, Prodi (May 17, 2006 - May 6, 2008) served as Minister without a portfolio of family policy issues [11] .

On April 15, 2015, Bindi, out of 120 minority representatives, left the courtroom during a vote in protest (the remaining 190 supporters in the hall unanimously supported the bill ) She told reporters: “Politics is not cynicism” [12] [13] . On April 20, 2015, by the decision of the party leadership, Bindi, among ten representatives of the opposition minority, was removed from the Commission on Constitutional Affairs of the Chamber of Deputies [14] .

On May 29, 2015, the Bindi-led Anti-Mafia Commission published on the eve of the regional elections scheduled for May 31 a list of 17 “unacceptable” candidates (impresentabili). Four of them participated in the elections in Puglia , thirteen in the Campaign ; the list included, among others, a candidate from the Democratic Party for the post of President of the Campaign, , as well as representatives of the Forward, Italy and Brothers of Italy parties [15] . On the same day, the commission removed from the list the representative of the Union Center Bajo Iacolare (Biagio Iacolare); Prime Minister Renzi accused the Anti-Mafia Commission of interfering in the electoral process, but Bindi at her press conference rejected this point of view [16] . Vincenzo De Luca, who won with a relative majority of votes, filed a complaint with the Prosecutor of Rome on June 2, 2015, accusing Bindi of defamation , violation of voting rights and abuse of official position [17] .

In June 2017, in an interview with la Repubblica , she criticized the position of Democratic Party leader Matteo Renzia, who supported the provision on the use of the proportional system in preparing the new Italian election law, calling it a possible cause of political instability, and reiterated the decision not to stand for election in the next parliamentary elections [18] .

Personal life

Bindi was single, but, according to her, several people were in love with her at different times, with one of them she had a close relationship (“my grandmother liked him so much!”). On May 23, 2006, National Alliance spokesman stated on the voting day for confidence in the second Prodi government that "Bindi, being a lesbian, cannot be Minister for Family Affairs." Rosie replied: “I would have nothing against being called homosexual if I were like that.” There are also cases of ambiguous remarks addressed to her, including from the right-wing politician Francesco Storace (“she is not even a woman”) and Silvio Berlusconi , who publicly spoke about Bindi as a more intelligent than beautiful woman. She answered the latter: “Io non sono una donna a sua disposizione” (I am not one of the women at his disposal) [2] .
