The Appomattox River is a river in the state of Virginia ( USA ), a tributary of the James River . The river is named after the Appomattok Indian tribe that once lived in these places, and therefore, in historical documents there are many different spellings of its name (Apamatuck, Apamutiky, Appamattuck, Appomattake, Apumetecs, etc.).

Geography
The source of the river is located 16 km northeast of the administrative center of Appomattox County . From there, it flows in a general direction to the southeast through the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest to Farmville. From Farmville, it flows in a large arc, first to the northeast, and then to the southeast, flows southwest of Richmond , flows through Petersburg (from where it becomes navigable), and flows into the James River in Hopewell .
History
The British colonists in Virginia tried to rename the river “Bristoll” (Bristoll River), but an Indian name stuck. During the Civil War , the Appomattox Campaign unfolded in these places in 1865 [1] .
