It was founded by naturalist L. Hart and her colleagues. Initially, weak and sick seals found in Waddense Bay were kept here. The center rescues seals injured by ship and boat propellers or fishing nets and those that have suffered from pollution of the sea. The center also rescues orphans. All seals after the rehabilitation period, which lasts from several weeks to six months, are released into the wild. The center also collects pieces of fishing nets in the adjacent water area that swim in the sea and can injure animals.

Later animals here began to be bred on purpose. Today, about 1750 seals live here, including individuals that were saved thanks to treatment in the nursery.

Here is the Wadden-centrum exhibition center, and with it there is a reference service for tourists who want to take a walk through the lowlands in the vicinity of the Wadden Sea.

The center is open to visitors daily.
