Biography
Educated at the School of Charters and Practical School of Higher Studies , then trained in Hellenistic studies under the guidance of Edouard Tournier . In April 1872, he received a licentiate degree, from November 1873, he taught his Hellenistic studies at the School of Higher Studies, began to cooperate with a number of scientific journals, and worked in the university library. Thanks to good knowledge of the ancient Greek language, he was allowed to work in the libraries of Sweden, Denmark, Spain and Portugal, where he was able to study many ancient manuscripts (in Spain, in particular, he worked for a whole year in 1875-1876). On January 1, 1881, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the works of Plutarch , then worked for several months at the Vatican Library in Rome, promising to return for cataloging manuscripts. Returning to Paris in early 1882, he suddenly became ill with typhus and died.
Charles Gros belongs to the annotated catalogs of ancient Greek foundations in Copenhagen ( Fr. Notices sommaires des manus grets de la grande bibliothèque de Copenhague ; 1879); and Escorial ( fr. Essai sur les origines du fonds grec de l'Escurial ; 1881), the editions of the Plutarchs Demosthenes and Cicero. After the death, Gros's “Notices bibliographies et autres articles” book of articles and notes and a large-scale memorial collection with the participation of major Hellenists from all over the world “Mélanges. Recueil de travaux d'érudition classique ”(both 1884).
