In 2010, in Zaporizhia , with the financial participation of Gerasimenko, Aviastar team was created, speaking in the Higher League of the Ukrainian championship. Gerasimenko in combination was also a team player. Aviastar managed to collect many famous Ukrainian basketball players, but success came to the team only once - in May 2012, Aviastar won the Ukrainian Cup , beating Musson in the final.

In the summer of 2012, at the initiative of Gerasimenko, who was the executive director of the Volgograd metallurgical plant "Red October" , the eponymous club was founded. The team managed to declare in the tournament Super League season 2012/2013 . Gerasimenko himself became not only the president of the club, but also entered the main team.

In November 2015, Gerasimenko became the majority owner of the Italian “Kantu” , for whose youth his son favored. In January 2016, he became president of the club, and his wife Irina became an adviser.

Dmitry Gerasimenko was removed from a plane flying to Moscow for a drunken brawl. According to the V1 website, the incident occurred on Sunday, March 3, on the flight of Aeroflot Airlines, which departed for Moscow at 18:30. Mr. Gerasimenko, being intoxicated, boarded the plane and began to speak very loudly on the phone. The flight attendant made a remark to him, but the man responded by lashing out at her with obscene language, after which the aircraft commander called the police squad aboard.

The rowdy was removed from the flight and taken to the line police department at the Volgograd airport, where a report was drawn up on him. The ministry noted that during the entire time when the protocol was drafted, the air hooligan behaved appropriately, fairly diminishing his ardor.

The refereeing of the match “Red October” - “Red Wings” caused a number of indignations from the side of the president of the Volgograd club Dmitry Gerasimenko.

As the Volga-Media news agency was informed by the press service of the VTB United League, today the directorate of the League considered the incident, having studied the video of the game and raised the questions of the arbitrators' decision. The meeting took into account Gerasimenko’s post-match statements.

As a result, the Directorate of the League decided to fine Dmitri Gerasimenko for 300,000 rubles for his statements affecting the honor and dignity of the judges.

In February 2019, Dmitry Gerasimenko sold the Kantu basketball club to a group of investors Tutti Insieme Cantù. According to unofficial information from the Italian media, “Kantu” was sold for 800 thousand euros. 350 thousand was paid at a time, the remaining part of the amount the new owners will pay within a few years. Buyers have to repay the debts of the club, which are estimated at 1.6 million euros ^[2] .

On May 26, 2015, Dmitry Gerasimenko was detained at the Moscow airport and transferred to Chelyabinsk to conduct investigative actions in a case initiated under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Fraud committed on a large scale”). He was suspected of assigning 280 million rubles to counterparties of the Zlatoust Electrometallurgical Plant, with which agreements were signed on the supply and transportation of natural gas for the enterprise. The criminal case was initiated back in 2014 after the application of “NOVATEK-Chelyabinsk” to law enforcement agencies.

On May 28, 2015, Gerasimenko was released from the temporary detention center in Chelyabinsk on bail of 10 million rubles.

In December 2015, the Main Investigation Department of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Chelyabinsk Region discontinued a criminal case against Gerasimenko in connection with the reconciliation of the parties. Termination of the criminal case was initiated by NOVATEK-Chelyabinsk.

In August 2016, Dmitry Gerasimenko was arrested in absentia by the Tversky District Court of Moscow at the request of the Moscow State Central Institution Department of the State Ministry of the Interior, which also accuses him in absentia of embezzlement (Article 160 of the Criminal Code). The sole owner of the company is suspected of embezzling a loan of $ 65 million, which VTB issued in 2007 to CJSC Russpetsstal to replenish working capital of CJSC Volgograd Metallurgical Plant Krasny Oktyabr. In addition, the businessman is charged with the illegal withdrawal of assets by 6.2 billion rubles during the bankruptcy procedure of the Red October plant. According to the investigation, the assets were transferred to the Volgograd Metallurgical Combine Red October, owned by the Swiss company Red October International with the sole shareholder Gerasimenko, through various schemes.

According to Nezavisimaya Gazeta, sources close to the management of Volgograd enterprises do not exclude that the failure of the state defense order could turn out to be a kind of revenge on the part of Gerasimenko for his persecution by Russian law enforcement officers ^[1] .
