Biography
Michele Abruzzo was born in Sciacca on December 29, 1904. At the age of 14, he made his debut in vaudeville on stage together with Giovanni Grasso . After the death of Angelo Musco , in late October 1938, together with Rosina Anselmi , founded a large theater company. Collaborating with renowned Italian theaters, he supported the development of drama in the Sicilian language . Inheriting the repertoire from Angelo Musco, expanded it with new works. Critics, including Renato Simoni , called him an outstanding dramatic actor, one of the most talented among his contemporaries.
For his contribution to the development of national culture, he was awarded the title of Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Saints Mauritius and Lazarus, the highest award of the republic. In 1952, together with Turi Ferro , Umberto Spadaro , Rosolino Bois and Rosina Anselmi, founded .
In 1920 he made his debut in the silent film "Law" directed by Elvira Notari . In 1938, starred in his first movie with sound, playing a major role in the film Mario Mattioli "Senora gave birth." After that, the movie almost always played supporting roles or characteristic characters. In 1984, he played the role of the public prosecutor in Damiano Damiani 's Octopus drama. In 1979, he announced his retirement from the theater, but in 1989, at the age of 85, he returned to the stage. Michele Abruzzo died in Catania on November 18, 1996.
