Biography
John Morehead was born in , Marion County , Iowa , in the family of Andrew Morehead and Francis Cooper [1] . He attended public schools, a private school in and the Business College [2] . In 1884, Morehead moved to Richardson County, Nebraska , where he worked as a teacher and farmer, and later founded his trading enterprise. Later he was one of the founders of the Barada State Bank [2] . On February 14, 1885, he married Minnie Weissender, they had two children [3] .
In 1895, Morehead moved to [4] , where he served as treasurer of Richardson County in 1896–99 and in 1900 he was mayor of the city [1] . In the years 1910-1912 he was a member and chairman of the Senate of Nebraska. As chairman of the Senate, Morehead on May 2, 2011 became the acting vice-governor of the state after the death of and held this position until 2012 [3] [4] .
In November 1912, Morehead was elected governor of Nebraska, and in 1914 he was re-elected for a second term [2] . During his term of office, a law was passed on disability benefits, the Blue Sky Law came into force, which regulates the offering and sale of securities in order to protect the public from fraud, and the state budget deficit [ 3] .
After the end of the term, Morehead left the post of governor, but remained active in politics. In 1923-1935, he was a member of the US House of Representatives, and in 1940 - a delegate to the National Congress of the Democratic Party [3] [4] .
Morehead died on May 30, 1942 in the hospital of St. Joseph , Missouri [1] , and was buried in Steele Cemetery in Falls City [3] [5] .
