He graduated from the Paris Lyceum of Louis the Great . In 1895 he entered the Charter School , in 1897 received a diploma of Higher Studies , and two years later - a diploma of archivist-paleographer. In the same year he was sent to work at the French school in Rome ( Palazzo Farnese ). In 1901 he returned to Paris.
The main subject of Chalandon's study was the history of the Norman Sicilian kingdom ; his major work, The History of Norman Domination in Italy and Sicily, covering the period from 1016 to 1194, received the Great Gober Prize from the French Academy in 1909.
Another major work is the history of the foreign policy of the Byzantine Empire under the first three Comnenes (1081–1180), two volumes of which were published in Paris in 1900 and 1912. This work, based on “gigantic factual material” [1] , remains the only summary work on this topic. The immediate merit of Chalandon is the development of the factology of Byzantine politics in Asia Minor [1] .
The latest work, “The History of the First Crusade before the election of Godfroy de Bouillon,” was published after the death of the author. Chalandon was also a co-author of Gustave Schlumberger at the creation of the “Sigillography of the Latin East.”
