EXID ( cor. 이 엑스 아이디 ; (read exeidy ; acronym for "Exceed In Dreaming" [1] ) is a South Korean girl group formed by Banana Culture Entertainment in 2012. The group consists of five members: Solji , Ellie, Hani, Herin and Jonghwa: They originally debuted with six people in February 2012 with the single “Whoz That Girl.” Hippity Hop 's debut mini-album was released in August of that year.

The band gained significant popularity in 2014 with the release of the single “Up & Down”. At first, the song did not show good results on the charts, but four months later it became No. 1 on the Gaon Digital Chart after a fancam appeared on the Internet for one of the participants (Hani), which became a viral video on YouTube [2] [3] . Ah Yeah's second mini-album was released in April 2015. Street's first full-length album was released in June 2016.
In early May, members Hani and Jonghwa decided not to renew their contracts with Banana Culture. After the comeback on May 15, the group was not disbanded, but took an indefinite break for an indefinite period, so that each participant engaged in individual activities.

Career
2011–12: Formation, debut, lineup changes and Hippity Hop
In May 2011, Shinsadong Tiger and AB Entertainment assembled several JYP Entertainment trainings to create a new female group. Yuzhi was the first member after trying to debut in the women's group JYP, which never took place. She contacted Hani, Heren and Jongwa, and they were all admitted to the agency. Soon, underground rapper Ellie joined the group. Dami, who had already completed an internship at AB, became the last member of the team.
The original name of the group was WT (short for “Who's That”), but a few months before the debut, the company changed its mind and the team was named EXID [4] . The official debut was supposed to take place in January 2012, but was delayed until February due to Ellie's injury, which she received during the rehearsals. On February 3, AB Entertainment announced that EXID would debut with the single “Whoz That Girl” [5] .
February 16, 2012 the release of the single album Holla [6] . Debut performance was on M! Countdown , after which they also performed on Music Core and Inkigayo [7] . The song took 36th place in the Gaon Singles Chart , over 840 thousand digital copies were sold.
In April, AB Entertainment announced the departure of Yuzhi, Dami, and Hareyon. The official statement said that Yuzhi and Dami were going to focus on their studies, and Hareyon on his acting career [8] [9] . Their place was taken by Solji (former member of the 2NB duo) and Herin, who was accepted into the group before the debut, but she was removed [10] . The new lineup EXID returned to the scene in August with their second single “I Feel Good” and their debut mini-album Hippity Hop , which subsequently made it to line 13 on the Gaon Albums Chart with 1,500 copies sold. The digital single “Every Night” was released in October. He debuted at 43rd place on the Gaon Singles Chart with sales of 105 thousand copies.
2013−15: Unit debut of Dasoni, “Up & Down”, Ah Yeah , Hot Pink and increased popularity
In February 2013, it was announced that Honey and Solji would form the Dasoni sub unit [11] . On February 15, their debut single, “Goodbye,” was released [12] .
On August 24, 2014 EXID performed a showcase where they performed the new single “ Up & Down ” [13] . On August 27, the song became available for download, but it did not have much success on the charts, reaching only 94 places in the Gaon Singles Chart [14] . But at the beginning of October, not only the single, but the group itself began to gain popularity after the appearance of a fancam on Hani, which became a virus on Korean social networks (views amount to more than 25 million) [15] . Due to the success of the video, EXID was again invited to perform on music shows, although the promotion was completed back in September [16] . They won their first victory since the debut on M! Countdown January 8, 2015.
In February 2015, Solji took part in the King of Masked Singer show, where she won first place, which attracted even more attention to EXID [17] . On April 13, a video clip was released for the song “Ah Yeah” and the self-titled mini-album [18] . In total, 4 victories were won with the single on music shows: two on Inkigayo (for April 26 and May 3) and Show Champion (for April 29 and May 6). On November 17, a video for the single “Hot Pink” was released. On November 25 and December 6, EXID won their victories at Show Champion and Inkigayo, respectively.
2016–17: Street , Chinese singles, Eclipse , Full Moon and Solji break
June 1, 2016 EXID released their first studio album Street with the main single “LIE” [19] . Street consisted of 12 tracks, in the creation of which the members of the group personally participated. The album debuted at number 7 on the Gaon album chart, while the single reached the top 5 [20] . "LIE" won a number of victories in music shows [21] [22] [23] . On December 20, they released their debut Chinese single, Cream, which reached number six on the Billboard China V Chart. [24] The next day, December 21, Banana Culture announced that Solzhi was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism , and she will be engaged in treatment, so the group will continue the promotion of four people [25] .
On January 10, 2017, the Chinese version of Up & Down was released [26] . The original version of the video clip had to be deleted because EXID danced against the backdrop of the “ Forbidden City ”, and Chinese fans considered this inappropriate [27] . March 17th, a performance was held in Mexico City as part of the annual music festival KCON. Due to health problems at Solji, the comeback groups decided to postpone until April, and it was soon announced that EXID would return only four of them [28] . On April 10, the third mini-album Eclipse was released [29] . The single “Night Rather Than Day” also gained public success, which allowed him to win several music shows [30] .
On May 12, Banana Culture announced a summer Asian tour, during which the group played concerts in Singapore and Hong Kong . A show was held in Taiwan on July 30, and in Seoul on August 12 [31] . On one of the days of concerts in Seoul, photos of five participants were published on social networks, and fans suggested that Solji's return would take place on one of the shows. During the concert, she suddenly appeared from the crowd to perform “Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring” together with the rest [32] .
On November 7, the fourth full moon mini-album, Full Moon , was released [33] . The release marked the return of Solji to activity in the group, even if she could take part only in the recording of the album itself, but did not participate in the filming of the video clip and promotion [34] . On November 21, the single "DDD" won the The Show [35] .
2018: Re: flower Project , LADY , Japanese debut, The Return of Solji, and “I Love You”
On December 31, 2018, EXID performed at the New Year's Eve Countdown Party in Taipei , Taiwan . In February 2018, EXID presented teasers for Re: flower Project , a project designed to release remodeled versions of previously released songs that were not major singles [36] . On April 2, the band returned with the single “ Lady ” [37] . Solji again did not participate in the promotion [38] . On April 10, the single “내일 해 ( Lady )” won the The Show [39] . At the end of July, the agency made an official statement regarding the health of Solji, announcing that the girl had already recovered, but not everything is known about the possibility of her further advancement [40] . On teasers for the debut Japanese single “ Up & Down ” EXID appeared in full force. The Japanese video clip “Up & Down” was released on July 30 [41] . On November 21, the digital single “ I Love You (알 러뷰)” [42] was released .
2019: Activities in Japan and We
On December 19, 2018, EXID announced their second Japanese live tour on February 10-11, 13 and 16, 2019 through their Japanese fan site, which was later named the “2019 EXID Valentine Japan Live Tour” and was successfully held. During the tour, EXID also performed their new Japanese single, “Trouble,” which is the title track of their first Japanese studio album, announced on February 4 via their fan site, which was released in April.
On January 17, it became known that the group’s contract with Banana Culture expired in May, negotiations with the participants are currently underway [43] [44] .
In early May, members Hani and Jongh decided not to renew their contracts with the agency. On May 15, the band released their fifth mini album, We . The group plans a joint promotion in the future. After promoting the album, the group took an indefinite break from group activity, so that each member engaged in individual activities. [45] Later, Banana Culture explained that the group would continue in Japan for another year, and a Japanese tour called 2019 EXID Summer Live Tour began in August. [46]
