Valerian Osipovich Podvysotsky ( 6 [18] January 1822 , Kiev Province [1] - 3 [15] July 1892 , Kazan [2] ) - Russian lawyer, doctor of medicine, pharmacologist, scientific writer, teacher, ordinary professor at Kazan University , full-fledged advisor. Scientist was only in the sixth dozen of life. The father of Professor Vladimir Podvysotsky .

Biography
Occurred from the nobility of the Chernigov province, Borzensky district. Enrolling in 1838 at the law faculty of Kiev University, he was soon forced to leave him due to the temporary closure of the university and go to Kharkov, who graduated in 1842 with a degree in law. After graduating from the university in the same year, he entered the service of a special assignment official to the trustee of the Kharkov school district, Count Golovkin, where he remained until 1850, when he retired and settled on his estate in the Chernigov province, doing business and land activities.
At the age of 50, he became interested in medicine and began to actively study pharmacology, then in 1872 entered the Derpt (Yuryevskiy) University , after which he defended his dissertation in 1878 under the name "Anatomische Untersuchungen über die Zungendrüsen der Menchen und Säugethiere", was recognized as a doctor medicine and made an assistant pharmacology, making a number of important studies here. Especially known are his works on preparations of ergot, emetic root, on podophyllin, on preparations of iron. In addition, he reworked and supplemented the textbook prof. Dybkovsky. In 1880 he became a private assistant professor and was sent abroad. In the early 1880s, he was asked to take a chair in pharmacology at the University of Krakow, but things did not work out for religious reasons (Podvysotsky was of Orthodox faith). July 1, 1885 the Council of Kazan University, was elected professor of pharmacology at the Department of Pharmacognosy and Pharmacy. At the university he founded a pharmaceutical laboratory and a famacognosis museum with a library.
He conducted a number of valuable pharmacological and chemical studies: he studied imetin , an alkaloid of ipecac root, Podophyllum pellatum, and other medicinal substances, and found out the importance of the active substances of podofillin . In 1884 he edited the posthumous edition of Dybkovsky's pharmacology. In addition, he wrote many essays and critical articles, educational materials for students. According to the memoirs of contemporaries, was a talented lecturer.
