Biography
He graduated from the Perm Theological School , where he led the choir from the age of 14. Then he lived in Solikamsk , performed in amateur concerts.
In 1909-1913 studied singing in private courses with the professor of the St. Petersburg Conservatory I.S. Tomars; money for training was collected by the balikalay orchestra of Solikamsk, which gave several paid concerts [2] . At the same time he sang in the choir of the Winter Buff Theater, in 1912-1917. performed in Petersburg theaters (Luna Park, Trinity Theater of Miniatures, People’s House, Musical Drama Theater ). In the years 1918-1922. as part of the opera company M.K. Maksakova performed in the cities of the Urals and Siberia. In the years 1922-1924. He performed in Harbin , Beijing , Shanghai and other cities of China. Since 1924 he performed in Moscow (“Free Opera”), since 1925 - in various cities of the country: Kiev (season 1925/26), Astrakhan (1926-1928), Perm (season 1927/1928), Nizhny Novgorod (1928 ), Saratov (1928, 1931-1932), Sverdlovsk (1928), Baku (1928-1930; the first performer of the Pugachev party in the Baku premiere of Eagle Riot A.F. Pashchenko ), Tbilisi (1932-1934).
In 1934-1958 - Artist of the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater . In 1938 he was arrested on charges of spying for Japan; in 1939 he was acquitted by a military tribunal for lack of corpus delicti, released [3] [4] .
During the Great Patriotic War, he acted as part of the front brigades.
From 1948 he taught at the theater, from 1956-1968. - at the Leningrad Conservatory (professor since 1965). Among his students are S. L. Gaudasinsky , V. P. Malyshev, E. E. Nesterenko , G. V. Seleznev , G. D. Isakhanov .
He was a member of the Art Council of the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater. S. M. Kirov, a member of the editorial board of the large-circulation newspaper “For Soviet Art”, in which he published articles on the work of theater artists and reviews. In 1962 he was a member of the jury of the II All-Union Vocal Competition named after M. I. Glinka [2] .

Creativity
Possessed a deep voice of a wide range, played both bass and baritone parts. Among the partners: L. A. Andreeva-Delmas , K. G. Derzhinskaya , G. M. Nelepp , F. I. Chaliapin , I. P. Yashugin .
In concerts he performed romances of domestic and foreign composers. Recorded on phonograph records.
