History
On August 14, 2001, the magazine Neskuchny Sad was registered with the Ministry of the Press of Russia [1] . The founder of the journal was the sisterhood in the name of the holy Prince Tsarevich Dimitri at the First City Hospital [2] . A team of professional journalists gathered at the journal’s editorial office; The chief editor, Yulia Danilova, worked in the Kommersant in the 1990s [3] .
The first issue in the article "Non-dull garden of virtues" explained why the magazine was named like this:
The neskuchny garden in Moscow is the place where the martyr Elizaveta Fyodorovna and her husband, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich lived for some time. They lived here before they left for the Kremlin, when riots broke out in Moscow, during which Sergei Alexandrovich was killed. For us, this is a very memorable place, and it is very important that the magazine will be associated with its holy martyr Elizabeth. Neskuchny garden is located next to our school of sisters of mercy , next to the temple in the First City Hospital - the first hospital church that was opened in Russia after the years of persecution of the Church [4] .
The magazine published interviews , reports and comments on topical issues of Orthodox life in Russia and abroad [2] . Permanent sections of the journal are “Life in the Church”, “Common cause”, “Middle circle”, “Culture”.
In 2004, the magazine was awarded the Grand Prix in the nomination "Calling" at the First Festival of Orthodox media " Faith and the word " [5] .
December 21, 2004 opened the website of the magazine nsad.ru [6] .
In 2007, the magazine was awarded the prize of the Russian State Military Historical Cultural Center under the Government of the Russian Federation. In the same year, he won first place at the II International Competition “Eurasia. Social portrait " [5] .
Before the economic crisis of 2008–2009, the journal received support from a major sponsor, but then it was forced to exist on the donations of sympathetic people [7] .
In February 2009, the magazine “Neskuchny Sad” and the portal “ Orthodoxy and the World ” decided to join forces in the Internet space. On the portal “Orthodoxy and Peace” a section NA-online appeared [8] , where it was supposed to publish all the fresh materials of the paper version of Neskuchny Garden [9] .
On December 15, 2010, the journal Neskuchny Sad was assigned the neck of the Synodal Information Department (certificate No. 42) [10] .
On May 24, 2013, the chief editor of the journal, Yulia Danilova, announced that the May-June issue of the journal will be the last, after which the publication will be transferred to the Internet format [11] . The journalist Sergey Chapnin , commenting on this step, noted that “the rejection of the paper carrier led to the loss of the existing audience and forced to conquer a new one, which uses electronic means. And this audience with other needs and interests is different in age ” [12] .
On September 9 of the same year, Danilova reported that the Neskuchny Sad Internet Journal ceases its work due to funding problems. The main reason for closing the magazine was that in 2013 the project did not receive the required number of donations. The possibility of reducing staff or advertising was not considered by managers [13] . Due to lack of money, the site owners decided to concentrate on the development of another, similar project - “Mercy.ru”, which at that time was the largest of the sites with similar subjects [7] . According to Julia Danilova,
“Neskuchny Sad” is a non-commercial project, and it is logical that when the money ran out, it was closed. We hope that now the subject of the portal “Mercy.ru” will expand somewhat. There was a small team there, and we did not have time to cover everything, even on the subject of charity. This is a site about good deeds, including those not related to church structures, and about the stories of those who need help [14] .
In 2014, Yulia Danilova noted that, in her opinion, “the conversation about faith in the media has now been exhausted”:
It seems to me that the main difficulty <...> is that this discourse on faith itself, the very talk about faith in the media, has now been completely exhausted. All the main thing is said, moreover, many times, everything is trodden, everything is repeated. In our experience of Neskuchny Garden, we began to encounter this: we already said this, and we said this, and we said this, we talked about this, it remains to investigate property conflicts, historical turns, who persecuted, who was standing on whom, and for what administrative reason what relics left ... This is not a religious conversation - this is investigative journalism related to religion [15] .
Ratings
Anna Gumerova, reviewing the first issue of the magazine, wrote:
“His general mood is already well defined. This magazine of works of mercy is not just an idle call to them; it is, if you will, a guide to action. The authors of the articles do not try to hide the difficulties, but nevertheless it is clear that these difficulties do not frighten them away or plunge them into despondency ” [16] .
As noted on the portal Polit.ru in October 2007:
“Neskuchny Garden” adds a more practical approach to missionary orientation, which is directly indicated by its subtitle “Orthodox Charity Works Magazine”. He tries to act as a collective organizer of charitable activities, using, among other things, Internet resources. The magazine does not just invite people to the bosom of the church. He calls them to specific cases. For example, there is a site “Miloserdie.ru”, completely dedicated to charity, it directly connects people who need help with those who can provide it. An entire community of volunteers has gathered around the site [17] .
In February 2008, Maxim Antipov and Lyudmila Rachkova gave the following rating to the magazine:
Designed as a charity magazine, it went beyond “social service” issues. The main question that the editorial board poses for itself and its readers: “How to be Orthodox in the modern world?” [18]
Maria Gorodova, a writer and columnist for Rossiyskaya Gazeta , said in March 2011 [19] :
The magazines “Foma” and “Neskuchny Sad” initially set a rather high level in church journalism, and I am pleased to see that they hold this level. This is serious, professional and competitive journalism, made by Orthodox people.
Journalist Ksenia Luchenko in June 2012 wrote:
The magazine "Neskuchny Sad" all these years has existed <...>, transforming from a catechetical journal about good deeds into a church-public monthly. Perhaps this is the only Orthodox magazine that maintains professional standards of quality and formats (except perhaps the JMP, where almost all employees used to work in the “big media” as well). Recently, Neskuchny Sad has been teetering on the edge: remaining under the official church structure, the magazine publishes rather sharp texts, including reports from opposition rallies , anti-Putin author columns (mention may be made among the authors of the priest Fyodor Lyudogovsky , biblical writer Andrei Desnitsky and others) , the controversy on hot topics is “ Pussy Rayot ” and the Gelman exhibition in Krasnodar [3] .
