Sir John Eldon Gorst ( born John Eldon Gorst ; May 24, 1835 , Preston , England - April 4, 1916 , London ) - English statesman and politician, lawyer, writer, teacher, rector. Royal attorney . General Solicitor of England and Wales (1885-1886).

Biography

Educated at Preston Grammar School and St. John's College in Cambridge (St John's College). He later studied law in London . He returned to Lancashire , where he taught mathematics.

 
Sir John Eldon Horst

After the death of his father in 1859, Horst inherited a significant fortune. But, instead of living comfortably in England, at the beginning of 1860 went through Australia to New Zealand . At first he taught at a missionary school for Maori children. He was later appointed to the post of resident magistrate in Waikato . He made friends with the Maori High Leader and acted as a mediator between the Maori and the government of Sir George Gray . Member of the liberal Aboriginal Defense League.

He was a commissioner in New Zealand, later returned to England and was admitted to the bar. Since 1875 - royal attorney .

Conservative politician . Since 1866 a member of the lower house of the British Parliament.

One of the best speakers of the conservative party, in 1885 served in the Salisbury government as solicitor general of England and Wales and comrade minister for Indian affairs (1886-1891). In 1885 he was elevated to knighthood.

In 1890, Horst was the first English delegate to an international working conference in Berlin .

In 1891–1892 - Finance Secretary of the Treasury. In 1892 he was elected one of the two chairmen of the Council of Cambridge University. Rector of the University of Glasgow (1893-1896).

In 1895-1902, he served as vice president of the UK Education Committee.

It is revered by one of the classics of New Zealand literature. He is the author of books about New Zealand, including The Maori-king, our quarrel with New Zealand (1864), Election manual (1883) and New Zealand Revisited: Recollections of the Days of My Youth (1908) .
