Santa Cruz County is a county in the west of central California , USA . The population of the district according to the 2010 census is 262 382 people [1] . The administrative center is the city of Santa Cruz [2] .

History
The county was formed in 1850, directly during the creation of the state of California.
Geography
The total area of the district is 1,570 km², of which 1,150 km² is land and 420 km² (26.7%) are water surfaces [3] . The district stretches between the Pacific coast and the crest of the Santa Cruz mountain range, its average width is about 16 km. Borders on San Mateo County (in the north), Santa Clara County (in the east), San Benito County (in the southeast) and Monterey County (in the south).
Population
According to the 2000 census [4] , the district’s population is 255 602 people. The population density is 222 people / km².
Out of 91,139 households, 31.9% have children under the age of 18, 48.0% are married couples living together, 10.2% are women living without husbands, and 37.3% do not have a family. 25.1% of all households consist of separate residents, in 8.2% of households live single people aged 65 years and older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.25.
23.8% of the population under the age of 18 lives in the okrug; 11.9% from 18 to 24 years old; 30.8% from 25 to 44 years old; 23.5% from 45 to 64 years old and 10.0% aged 65 years and older. The average age of the population is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.8 males.
The median household income was $ 53,998 and the median household income was $ 61,941 . Per capita income is $ 26,396.
