According to the United States Census Bureau , the total area of the parish is 1,983.942 km 2 , of which 1,973.582 km 2 are land and 10.619 km 2 or 0.500% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , the parish has 25,440 residents, consisting of 8,102 households and 5,930 families . The population density is 13.00 people per km 2 . There are 9,157 residential buildings in the parish, with a building density of about 5.00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 71.90%, African Americans - 24.60%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 1.72%, Asians - 0.57%, Hawaiians - 0.01%, representatives of other races - 0.24 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.96%. Hispanics accounted for 4.50% of the population, regardless of race .
Of the total number of households , 36.90% are children under the age of 18 years, 54.00% of households are married couples living together, 15.20% of households are single women without a spouse, 26.80% of households households are not related to families , 24.30% of households consist of one person, 11.10% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.62 people and the average family size is 3.12 people.
