Biography
William Poynter was born in , Illinois , where he graduated from a local college in 1867 [1] . In 1879, he moved to , Nebraska , where he worked on a ranch and farm. [2]
Poynter was one of the organizers of the , in 1884 he was elected to the House of Representatives of Nebraska, and in 1890 to the State Senate. He was a member of the committee on agriculture [2] and interim chairman of the Senate [1] . In 1892, Poynter unsuccessfully ran for the US House of Representatives from the farmers' left-wing populist [1] .
In November 1898, Poynter was elected Governor of Nebraska. During his tenure, railroad standards were improved, and a law was passed to hold state fairs at Lincoln . Poynter ran for a second term, but was defeated, and on January 3, 1901, resigned [2] .
Poynter continued to do business, and was also chairman of the Security Savings and Loan Association [1] . In 1909, during a speech in the State Senate, Poynter suffered a stroke and soon died [3] . Poynter was buried at the Wyuka Cemetery cemetery in Lincoln [2] [4] .
In 1869, Poynter married Maria Josephine McCorkle, they had two children [2] [1] .
