Giorgio Tozzi ( born Giorgio Tozzi ; January 8, 1923 , Chicago - May 30, 2011 , Bloomington , Indiana ) is an American opera singer (bass).

Biography
Sang since adolescence. He studied biology at DePaul University , but soon returned to music; studied with , and John Howell ( John Daggett Howell ).
During the Second World War he served in the army.
In 1948 he made his debut as a baritone in on Broadway ( Tarquinius in Benjamin Britten ’s “The ”, the main role was played by Kitty Carlyle ). Since 1949, he sang in the musical "Tough at the Top" in London ( Adelphi Theater ). Since 1950, he trained in Milan [1] with Giulio Lorandi (the lessons cost him - literally - the “last shirt”: money under the law on the rights of military personnel intended to pay for his lessons was delayed for nine months, and Tozzi put his cells in, then - suitcases and, finally, clothes. The event turned out to be "prophetic": he later sang Vecchia zimarra several times in Bohemia , an aria about the transfer of a coat as a deposit). In Milan he made his debut at the ( Count Rodolfo - “ Somnambulist ” by V. Bellini ), in 1953 - in La Scala (“ Valley ” by A. Catalani ).
Returning to the United States already as a bass, in 1955 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera ( Duke Alvise Badoero in The Mona Lisa by A. Ponchielli ), where he sang in 528 performances for 20 years (the final performance was Collen in Bohemia by J. Puccini in 1975 ) He also performed at the San Francisco Opera , La Scala , and the [2] ; toured in the cities of the USA and Europe.

He taught at the Juilliard School , since 1991 - at at Bloomington Indiana University (since 2005 - Indiana University School of Music); Honorary Professor of the School.
