Biography
Silas Holcomb was born in Gibson County, Indiana , in the family of John Holcomb and Lucinda Revis Skelton [1] . At a young age in the summer, he helped out on a family farm, and in the winter he studied at school [2] . In 1879, a year after the death of his father, Holcomb moved to Hamilton County, Nebraska , where he worked as a farmer and teacher [2] . After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1882, and then founded his law practice in Broken Bow [3] .
In 1891, Holcomb was elected the judge of the 12th judicial district, and in November 1894, he was appointed governor of Nebraska [1] (with the support of William Bryan ). In 1896, he was re-elected for a second term. During his tenure, Sheldon’s school lands law was passed, reforms were initiated in the state power system and the problem of corruption in the state treasury was raised [3] .
Holcomb left his post on January 5, 1899. From 1900 to 1906, he served as a judge at the High Court of Nebraska [1] , and from 1913 to 1919 he was chairman of the board of state authorized state institutions [3] . Because of his poor health, Holcomb retired and moved with his daughter to Bellingham , Washington , where he lived until his death on April 25, 1920 [1] [2] . His body was returned to Broken Bow and buried in the city cemetery [4] .
On April 13, 1882 [1] in Mills County, Iowa , Holcomb married Alice Brinson [2] , and they had three children [3] .
