Biography

Lorenzo Krauns was born in , Skohari County, New York , into the family of John Krauns and Margaret van Aernam. [1] His father was German, and his mother was Danish [1] . He attended seminary and public school. Later, Krauns studied law, in 1857 was admitted to the bar, and opened a private practice in [2] .

During the Civil War, Krauns served as captain of a light artillery battery. In 1862, he was wounded in a battle near the Rappahannock River , after which he retired and returned to legal practice. In 1864, Krauns moved to Nebraska , where he continued to work as a lawyer [1] [2] .

In 1866, Krauns was elected to the House of Representatives of Nebraska , and was also a delegate to the constitutional convention. In 1867-1873 he was a member of the State Supreme Court, and in 1873-1877 - a member of the US House of Representatives from Nebraska [3] . In 1879-1883, Krauns headed the state tax service, in 1880 - the state delegation at the national congress of the Republican Party , and in 1891-1892 he was the US Under Secretary of the Treasury [2] .

In November 1892, Krauns was elected Governor of Nebraska. During his tenure, the Railways Act was passed, staff expenses were limited, and the impeachment procedure was applied to three officials. Crowns resigned on January 3, 1895, but remained in politics, and in 1900 was for one term a member of the Nebraska Senate [2] .

In 1860, Krauns married Mary Griffiths, they had four children [2] . After the death of his wife in 1882 [3] , he remained a widower and in recent years lived with one of his children [1] .

Lorenzo Krauns died on May 13, 1909 in Omaha , and was buried at City Cemetery. [2] [4] One city near Lincoln (now extinct) was named after him.
