Biography

Edoardo Porro was born on October 17, 1842 in the city of Padua. He studied medicine at the medical school of Pavia, where in 1865 he received a doctorate in medicine.

In the years 1866-1867 in the ranks of the army Garibaldi participated in the war for the unification of Italy. Then he joined the Ospedale maggiore hospital in Milan as an assistant, graduating from an obstetric school in the same city, and then taught in it. In 1875 he received the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Pavia, which he held until 1882, returning to Milan and heading the Santa Catarina Obstetrics School there. In 1891 he was appointed senator of the Kingdom of Italy. In 1900 he became president of the Italian Society of Natural Sciences.

He published a number of excellent works in his specialty, of which Monografia sull'amputazione utero-ovarica caesarea was famous, containing a description of the operation named after him - excision of a pregnant uterus with appendages, which he proposed to reduce the mortality of women during childbirth. For the first time such an operation was carried out on May 21, 1876 in Pavia; Prior to this, Porro experimented on animals. Subsequently, this technique, although progressive for its time, was supplanted by safer methods.
