Biography
Ignazio Porro was born on November 25, 1801 in Pinerolo. He studied at the Military School in Turin , becoming in 1836 a military engineer of the Sardinian kingdom , and served in the engineering department of the Sardinian troops. He was engaged in geodetic works and took an active part in the introduction of railways in Italy, during the construction of the Mont Cenis tunnel , conducted topographic surveys of the area in the area between Bardonecchia and Modan , in 1840 he designed the railway line between Genoa and Sale .
In 1842 he built extensive workshops in Turin for the construction of rolling stock of railways. Since 1848 he settled in Paris , where he indulged almost exclusively in practical optics at the Institut Technomatique he opened. He was distinguished by ingenuity in the design of optical devices , and he owns many improvements in pipes, eyepieces , rangefinders, and so on; for the first time, in 1850, he was proposed a type of shortened telescope with prisms that are used in binoculars .
In 1853, he invented slit photography , which he used for technical and scientific purposes.
In 1858, he studied the comet of comet Donati spectroscopically .
