- January 1 - Portuguese explorers, led by Cabral, Pedro Alvaris , sailed to the Gulf of Guanabara , Brazil, and mistook it for the mouth of the river, which they called Rio de Janeiro .
- May 9 - Christopher Columbus sailed from Cadiz (Spain) on the fourth and last expedition to the New World .
- May 21 - Portuguese navigator Nova, Juan da discovered the uninhabited island of St. Helena .
- August 14 - Columbus landed on the shore where the modern city of Trujillo is located and called this part of the sea the Gulf of the Depths ( Spanish: Golfo de Honduras ).
- September 18 - Columbus discovered the Mosquito Coast ( Nicaragua ) and the “Golden Coast” ( Costa Rica , “Rich Coast”).
- Vespucci, Amerigo, upon returning to Lisbon from sailing in the New World , wrote a letter “New World” ( lat. Mundus Novus ) to Lorenzo Medici that South America should be a separate continent .
