Very little is known about his life. It is known that he was born in a very wealthy notary family and probably received a law degree, because he inherited his father’s business, and from 1830 owned the former Abbey of Malese (near the town of the same name ), where he lived and wrote his works. The first scientific work of his authorship was published in 1825. He was a member of the French Society of Antiquaries and several other scientific societies, including the Belgian Society of Numismatists since 1858. He was married, his wife survived him for four years. There were no children in this marriage, but the case of Poet d'Avan was continued by his nephew Benjamin Fillon ( Fr. Benjamin Fillon ; 1819-1881), who also published a number of works on numismatics.
His major work is “Feudal Coins of France” ( French Monnaies féodales de France ; Paris, 1858-1860, reprint 1997); other works: A Description of the Coins of the French Seniors ( French Description de monnaies seigneuriales françaises ; Fontenay, 1853) and many critical notes in The Revue Numismatique from 1845-1864.
