Patera ( lat. Patera , plural paterae ) is an extraterrestrial crater of irregular shape or with uneven edges [1] [2] . Most patters are volcanic craters [3] [4] [5] . The name is taken from the Latin language, where it means a shallow bowl , used in ancient culture for the offering of wine to the gods and other purposes [6] [7] . The term "patera" is used in the planet nomenclature - it is part of the names of objects. In international names (written in the Latin alphabet and approved by the International Astronomical Union ), the word Patera, like other terms of planetary nomenclature, is capitalized and comes after the name itself (for example, Dazhbog Patera - Pater Dazhbog ) [8] , and in Russian - with small and are usually located before the name [2] . In addition, this term is used simply as a characteristic (and can even be applied to an unnamed object) [9] [10] .

Content

Nature Pater

The term "patera", like other terms of the planetary nomenclature [1] [11] [12] , does not serve as an indication of the origin of an object, but only describes its appearance. Most patters of Mars , Venus and Io are volcanic craters or calderas [3] [5] [13] , and some (for example, the Martian patera Orc [3] [14] [15] ) are probably percussion . At least some patters of Triton [16] and the only (as of 2015) named titer of Titan - Pater of Sotra [17] - are most likely craters of cryovolcanoes [18] . Sometimes, among the defining features, a pater is called shallow depth [5] [18] [19] [20] . There is no clear boundary between patters and ordinary craters [19] .

Pater Names

Proper names with this term, as a rule, give craters of low - shield - volcanoes (when the volcano itself is subtle and does not deserve the name). Craters of high volcanoes usually remain nameless, but the name is given to the volcano itself [5] [12] .

The geological term "mountain patera" ( English highland patera ), in contrast to the nomenclature term "patera", refers to the entire volcano [21] [22] .

The term “patera” (together with 12 other terms of planetary nomenclature) was introduced in 1973 at the XV General Assembly of the IAC . Then were named 9 Martian pater captured by the Mariner-9 spacecraft in 1972-1973 [2] [8] [23] .

As of March 2015, the term Patera or Paterae is in the name of 249 objects: 144 on Io , 73 on Venus , 20 on Mars , 6 on Ganymede , 5 on Triton and 1 on Titan [8] .

Paters on different celestial bodies are called differently [24] :

  • on Venus - in honor of outstanding women;
  • on Mars - by the names of neighboring albedo details on the maps of Giovanni Schiaparelli or Eugene Antoniade ;
  • on Io - in honor of the gods, goddesses and heroes associated with fire, the Sun, thunder or volcanoes, mythical blacksmiths, as well as the names of neighboring centers of eruptions;
  • on Ganymede - by the names of temporary rivers ( wadi ) of the Fertile Crescent ;
  • on Titan - in honor of the deities of happiness, peace and harmony of different peoples. But the only (as of 2015) named Pater Titan bears the name of the Norwegian island of Sotra, inherited from the name of the Sotra Facula fakula removed from the map [25] ;
  • on Triton - with different names associated with water (for example, the names of mythical creatures or places), except for names of Greek and Roman origin.
