Has the right to veto laws passed by the General Assembly , is the Supreme Commander of the Illinois National Guard and can pardon the prisoners. One of the 14 US governors who do not have limits on the number of terms. Currently, Jay Robert Pritsker, a member of the Democratic Party , takes office on January 14, 2019.
Candidate Requirements
The term of office of the governor of Illinois is four years, and there are no restrictions on the number of terms the governor. The inauguration is held on the second Monday of January after the gubernatorial elections. One term is four years. The governor must be:
- US citizen
- Minimum age - 25 years
- Illinois resident for three years before the election
Residences and offices
The governor resides in his executive mansion in Springfield, at 410 East Jackson Street. The first resident of the mansion was Governor Joel Matteson. He moved there in 1855. It is one of the three oldest governor residences in the United States.
Some governors, like Rod Blagojevich , did not use the executive mansion, but lived in their personal homes, reaching Springfield in a private jet or car. [2]
