History
Chernihiv and Taras Shevchenko connects the poet's repeated stay in the city. For the first time Shevchenko drove through Chernigov in May in 1843, heading from St. Petersburg to Ukraine. Later, in 1846-47, Shevchenko was in Chernigov on behalf of the Archaeographic Commission . In Chernihiv region, Shevchenko visited many cities and villages, repeatedly visited the Galaganov , Tarnovsky , Lizogubov , created some of his artistic paintings. Many of his things and works of this period are now stored in the Chernihiv Historical Museum .
The first monument to Shevchenko in Chernigov was typically Soviet - a concrete statue of an elderly poet 2.5 meters high on a plastered pedestal, erected in 1950 at the entrance to the city from the side of Sednev . Due to the large-scale construction in the northern part of Chernigov in the 1960s and the unfortunate location of the monument relatively far from the city center, in 1964, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko, the monument was moved to the Central Park of Culture and Leisure, turning it to face Gums .
On September 21, 1992, in honor of the 1300th anniversary of the city, at the same place, a conceptually different monument was opened to the Kobzar. The opening of the monument was attended by the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk [2] . The previous monument was moved to the territory of the former communications regiment.
Now the monument is a traditional venue for ceremonies dedicated to Taras Shevchenko.
