Shasta ( eng. Shasta County ) is a county in northern California , USA . According to the 2010 census, the county population is 177,223 people. The administrative center is the city of Redding [1] .

History
Shasta is one of the districts originally formed when California was created in 1850. In 1852, part of the district was separated and formed a new district - Siskia; in 1956, the district of Tihama separated from Shasta. The district was named after Mount Shasta (now located within the district of Siskia).
Geography
The total area of the county is 9960 km², of which 9,780 km² is land and 190 km² (1.9%) are water surfaces [2] . Mountains surround the county from the west, north and east. The Sacramento River flows from the mountains in the north and crosses the central part of the county, heading for the Sacramento Valley in the south. The Shasta Trinity National Forest and the Lassen Volcanic National Park are partially located on the territory of the district. In addition, the Shasta large reservoir is located within the county.
There are 3 cities in the Shasta district: Anderson, Redding and Shasta Lake.
Population
According to the 2000 census [3] , the population of Shasta County is 163,256. The population density is 17 people / km². The racial makeup of the district includes 89.3% of whites ; 0.8% Black or African American ; 2.8% Native Americans ; 1.9% Asian ; 0.1% of Pacific Islanders ; 1.7% of other races and 3.5% of two or more races. 5.5% of all races are Hispanic . For 94.0% of the population, the native language was English and for 3.3% - Spanish.
Of the 63,426 households, 31.7% have children under the age of 18, 53.0% are married couples living together, 11.9% are women living without husbands, and 30.6% have no family. 24.7% of all households are made up of individuals; 10.2% of households are single people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.52, and the average family size was 2.98.
26.1% of the population is under the age of 18; 8.2% from 18 to 24 years; 25.3% from 25 to 44 years; 25.2% from 45 to 64 years old and 15.2% aged 65 years and older. The average age of the population is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.2 males.
The average household income was $ 34,335, and the average household income was $ 40,491 . The per capita income is $ 17,738.
