Zimmerling, Anton Vladimirovich

Anton V. Zimmerling (born July 3, 1964 , Moscow ) is a Russian linguist , doctor of philological sciences (2001), professor (2002). He is the author of works on the theory of Scandinavian languages ​​and the history of Scandinavian literature, translations of a number of Icelandic sagas into Russian.

Biography

He graduated from the Romano-Germanic department of the philological faculty of Moscow State University in 1986. He defended his thesis on Old Icelandic under the direction of O. A. Smirnitskaya. In 1991 he defended his dissertation at Moscow State University, “Subject-predicate relations in Old Icelandic prose.” In 2001 he defended his doctoral dissertation at the Russian State Humanitarian University, “The Syntactic Typology of Scandinavian Languages”. In 1988-1993 he taught at MGIMO , in 1993-2002 - at the German department of Moscow State University. Since 2002 - Professor, Department of Russian Language, Moscow State University for the Humanities M.A. Sholokhov . Since 2017 - professor and chief researcher at the State. IRY them. A.S. In 1996-2006, A. V. Zimmerling was a senior and leading researcher at the Slavic-Germanic Center of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences , chief scientific editor (together with A. A. Gugnin ) of volumes I-III of the Slavic-Germanic Studies. Since the mid-1990s, he taught part-time at the Russian State Humanitarian University. Since 2013, on a part-time basis, has been working as a leading researcher in the typology sector of the Institute of Linguistics of the RAS [2] .

A.V. Zimmerling became a participant and organizer of a number of international conferences. He is a member of the International Society of Sagas, the International Typological Society, the St. Petersburg Linguistic Society, the Russian Union of Germanists. He was a member of the expert council on philology and art criticism of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation (2013–2016), since 2013, member of the board of the International Society of Slavic Linguistics, since 2014 - chief editor of the journal Vestnik MGU im. M.A. Sholokhov. Series Philological Sciences ”and chairman of the Society of Slavic Linguistics.

Scientific activity

The author of several articles and two monographs on the syntax and prosody of Germanic and Slavic languages. In these works, Zimmerling gave a parametric description of word order syntax and subject-predicate relations in ancient and new Scandinavian languages, as well as a parametric description of Slavic word order systems with chains of cliques; discovered a class of predicates - words of a category of a state in ancient Germanic languages ​​and built a typology of words of a category of a state; reconstructed the Old German stress in the verb stems and reinterpreted Werner's law; proved the effect of Wackernagel's law in Old Icelandic and Middle Norwegian languages ​​and the construction of a typology of languages ​​with chains of predicate cliques; interpreted linear accent transformations in languages ​​with free word order in terms of softly context-sensitive grammars.

An important direction in the scientific activity of A.V. Zimmerling is the translation into Russian and the commentary on the publication of works of Icelandic literature. At least two “ modern sagas ” have been translated and published - “ The Saga of Icelanders ” and “ The Saga of Aron the Son of Hörleiv ” - and 13 clan sagas and strands, including the “ Saga of the People from the Sandy Coast ”, the “ Saga of the Allies ” , " Saga of the Stewards ", " Saga of the Named Brothers ", " Saga of the Sons of Droplaug ."

Plans for the publication of Icelandic sagas in two scientific series

In the 2007 Saga of Icelanders, A. V. Zimmerling announced the publication by 2010 of translations of a number of Icelandic medieval texts. It should have been two series.

The first of the planned series involves a commentary on the publication of all the works of Sturla Tordarson.

  • Volume 1. "The Saga of the Icelanders."
  • Volume 2. "The Hakon Old Saga."
  • Volume 3. “The Saga of the Magnus Corrector of Laws” and fragments of the Old Icelandic annals associated with the name Sturla.
  • Volume 4. "The book on the settlement of the Earth" (edited by Sturlubok).

The second of the planned series involves the publication of a series of Icelandic sagas, known as the " Sturlung Saga " ... The translation of the "Sturlung Sagas" is planned to be released in separate volumes.

  • Volume 1. "The Saga of the Icelanders."
  • Volume 2. "The Saga of Torgils and Khavlidi" and "The Strand of Geyrmund Hellskin."
  • Volume 3. The Saga of Sturl, Prologues and Genealogies.

All monuments included in these two series are translated into Russian for the first time.
