Biography
Born in Harbin, where his father worked for the CER and was the sales representative of Exportmech [1] . He studied at a Jewish school in English in Shanghai (where the family settled in 1936 ), then in a Catholic boarding school. In 1947, without parents, he repatriated to the USSR in a group of children of Soviet citizens and was assigned to an orphanage in the Chita Region . A father, a native of Nizhneudinsk , was arrested upon his return to the USSR.
In 1955 he graduated from the philological faculty of the A.I. Herzen Leningrad Pedagogical Institute , specializing in Romano-Germanic philology. He taught at the Gorlovka Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages , Kabardino-Balkarian State University , Dagestan State University , at the Department of Higher Mathematics at Novosibirsk State University (1961-1971) [2] [3] [4] .
In 1963 he founded the Department of Mathematical Linguistics of Novosibirsk State University [5] [6] [7] . He defended the dissertation of the candidate of philological sciences on the subject “Journalism of James Baldwin and the Negro Liberation Movement in the USA” in 1970 .
He was a researcher at the Far Eastern Scientific Center (head of the laboratory for the study of the West Bank of the United States, 1971-1974), worked in the World Service of Moscow Radio (host of the program "Culture and Art", 1974-1982), the State Committee for Publishing of the USSR (Director of International Book Exhibitions and Fairs, 1982-1989). In 1989, he founded the first Jewish newspaper in the USSR in Russian, “Herald of Jewish Soviet Culture” ( WESC , later “International Jewish Newspaper”), and became its editor.
In the translations of T.G. Golenpolsky, individual editions published the books of Samuel Becket (1969), Thornton Wilder (1970), James Baldwin (1973), Irwin Shaw (1976, 1978), Arthur Haley (1983), plays by Arthur Miller (1980, 1988 ), Edward Albee (1968) and Arthur Kopit (1989), also translated Carson Mackalers and Robert Penn Warren [8] . For the translation of A. Kopit’s play “Dad, Dad, Poor Dad!” You won’t come out of the closet, you’ve been hanged by our mother between the dress and pajamas. ”T. G. Golenpolsky and E. V. Vishnevsky were awarded the title“ Dramatist Golden Feather ”(1989). He compiled collections of American folklore and contemporary American literature for the youth (1983, 1986), prepared a commentary edition of the book “Two Cultures” by Phillip Bonoski (1978), published a manual “Doing Business in Russia” ( How to Do Business in Russia , 1995 and 1996). The author of the script “Mikhoels: Ordinary Murder” (with Yu. V. Glezarova , 2006).
